[Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
And youre maybe a little annoyed at the lack of coverage on MOTD or on the regional news, maybe even on the BBC's website they had a score but no match report. Your match previews maybe dont give all the team news you really want?

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
MOTD cut out our only shot in the 2nd half against Man U and it was more of a clear cut chance than most of theirs .
Apart from that, MOTD is much better this season.

Welcome to the Scottish first division. Queen of the South fan living in manchester gets me no coverage except from a few shaky clips from the QoS home page. The BBC just lifts it's news straight from the official site and pieandbovril.com a week later. Even the odd occasion I get to see Scotsport, Queens only ever get about 2 minutes coverage, just because we're a part time team and not in the central belt

That said, i still have major issues with the Doonhamers for the fact that Dumfries is the only place ive ever been arrested, and that you gave us that twat of a player manager who took us down to division 2, AND brought ****ing Des McKeown with him.

everyone who doesn't support a regional team will never understand the real passion for a club some people have.
(i know the thread isn't about that)

are you seriously going to claim that nobody in glasgow supports the old firm, or that there are no genuine chelsea supporters?
man u are a different matter entirely, however.

Look at these rough estimates. And then think of what im trying to say.
Manchester has about 200,000 Man U Fans
Glasgow has around 400,000 Celtic & Rangers fans
London has maybe 400,000 Chelsea Fans
The trouble is
Perth has 50,000 Celtic & Rangers fans
Inverness has 25,000 Celtic & Rangers fans
Stirling has 25,000 Celtic & Rangers fans
Bangkok has more Man U Fans than Manchester
New York has more Celtic & Rangers fans than the whole of Scotland
And theyll all tell you theyre diehard supporters , etc etc.

i'm not saying there aren't 'fake' supporters, just that they're neither the only nor neccessarily most prominent kind

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
I live in london, and thusly i support Spurs (<3) although i do only live a few miless off the Valley (charlton`s ground) and a bit further from the Den (Millwall`s) i feel no real passion for charlton, but i do go regularly to millwall games, as i have 4-5 mates their youth team (ie. curtis, although i don`t know him as well as others), etc.
ps. yes, i do have a fierce hatred for arsenal >3

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
Its not a question of passion, its the initial choice. Seriously, its worse in Scotland than England though. You cant go anywhere - its always rangers and celtic fans. Cities like Aberdeen - which have ONE football team, which has had some sort of success in the past - are still made up of at least 10% rangers / celtic. Dundee and Edinburgh are worse.
Now i mean, i dont care if you follow Rangers everywhere and anywhere buy all the merchandise know all the players go to the U21's matches get the tattoo do the orange walks etc. If you come from paisley, and were born in Paisley, and St Mirren or someone goes out of business, that is _your fault_.

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
I don't see the importance of being a "die hard fan" or "mediocre team X till I die" or saying "acrington stanley born n bred, u dont support lekington united becuz u r not a football fan". You are no more of a football fan because you live in Botsworth and go and watch Botsworth Sunday football club than if you live in Botsworth and support Manchester United. In fact, it is likely that you pay a lot more to visit a Manchester United match than a Botsworth Sunday football club, plus you get to see a much better quality of football.
Anyone who thinks that they are a "die hard fan" of a shitty team is probably just trying to rage against the machine.

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
There is a reason teams are called [/b]Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, and Glasgow[b] Celtic.
Otherwise every team would be called the Buccanneers, the Spartans, The crusaders, the invaders, all that sort of bullshit.
If you have any sense of pride in your clubs history, you know that it was founded where it was because there was a population there. That the club built up from **** all to where it is today. Its all very romantic, yadda yadda. But you only Get mass supporters of a club if they are successful. One of celtics things that makes them widely popular is the fact its a catholic club, founded by irish. Now this means Irish Catholics, Catholics everywhere, and people who are even 3rd generation irish in the USA or whereever, consider themselves to have an affinity with Celtic.
Now we wont even get into why mixing religion and football is wrong, because its nothing to do with my point, but..
Even in Scotland there's a club founded by Irish Catholics BEFORE celtic - Hibernian! Yet (except De Niro), who the **** supports hibs? Do they have a huge global fan base? No. Why? Because they arent successful, now, or well, basically ever. They havent won anything but a League Cup for 102 years.
People, are glory hunters. People from the highlands and islands wouldnt support Rangers if there was a more high profile reactionary protestant club. You bring the point up, is this wrong LHC? Yes, of course it is. Your local club who were set up because people like you live in the area goes bankrupt cause you "like the way arsenal play". In football, the highs mean absolutely nothing without the lows. You dont seem to realise that with your help, with your gate receipts and merchandise purchases, your local shit club, could one day rise and be great. Manchester United weren't always awesome, you realise?

And i'm sure each championship Man Utd have won has been absolutely glorius for the Mancunians who stood by their team as they dropped down the divisions, rather than those who cant remember anything but Man Utd winning.

I think these two sentences sum up the current british attitude to football.
The majority of kids now support people like man utd for no other reason than they like to be associated with the success. Not many are in it for the love of a team anymore which for me is very sad. I remember watching Birmingham drop to the third division and be bought out by some cheap clothing entrepreneur (the Kumars). I remember having a string of crap managers to be followed up be debatebly the most charasmatic manager in the football league (barry fry), through to trevor francis and steve bruce.
For me the last couple of years have been a breath of fresh air. Its great to see the team I have supported since i was born develop and grow.
I still can't see why people support anything other than a local team. I don't understand why they would want to. I have had much more fun as a local suporter than I could have ever got from supporting one of the big teams.

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
I support Arsenal because I was born in London. Since ive moved down to Exeter I also follow the West country teams (Exeter, PLymouth!!!!, Yeovil and Torquay) Im gonna see some more games down at Plymouth because I beleive they can get into the premiership next year so it looks like i will be getting a season ticket for next season if this form carries on and they get promoted!! This means i can go and see Arsenal, man u, villa, chelsea etc... down at Plymouth on a saturday afternoon.
Would you consider me as a "glory hunting fan"?

Good question. I was born in birmingham and I support a birmingham football team. too many in my view use that as an excuse. So in answer to your question possibly.
However I would assume the glory hunters mainly to be just those with no links to the area of there football team.
Take my nephew Daniel - he is 11 and supports man utd. For me he is a victim of Man Utd marketing as he was born in Birmingham and his entire family support Blues.

Just because you do/don't live near somewhere doesn't mean you care about that club any more/less than you would if you lived closer/farther away..

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
Its a shame when you get these glory hunters coming along...I have a reason to support arsenal but i also support other clubs aswell. If plymouth went up to the Prem then I would support them just as much as Arsenal.

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
I support Arsenal because my family has roots dating back to the fact we had a few relatives playing as players playing back in the early 20th century and they've supported them since. When I was younger I was a season ticket holder, have never lost faith, know more about the ins and outs of Arsenal than most Arsenal fans know, I used to have an official membership pack distributed every month when I was little - don't know what happened to that. Last thing I ever got from them was a magazine and a catelogue.

Re: [Football] So you support a "Regional" club?
I've supported Glasgow Rangers since I was a young un, cause it was my local club, I take pleasure in the fact that I can walk to my club's stadium from my door (I was raised in Renfrew till the age of 5). I supported them before the souness/murray revolution got into effect, and have supported them whereever I've moved.
Cept cause they are and have been successful I'll fully expect that unless I act like the hardcore hoodlum of the club no-one will believe I'm anything but a glory seeker... prawn sandwich fans and what not.

Only in the sense that its my fault if a family owned convenience store goes out of business due to myself, and others like me, choosing to instead shop at a bigger multinational store which offers better products at a similar price.
If a company, or football club, is offerring a shitty product at uncompetitive prices, it can hardly complain when customers choose not to buy it.

I was a fan of Man Utd way back when they hadn't won the league for 26 years! Then I hit 15 and realised I already had my outlet of pointless jingoism in the Irish national side
