Old DOS Games

I'm using Win98SE, and I wanna play some old DOS games. Problem is, some of they say I have too little free RAM (I presume it's cutting some end digits off my 262,144kb). How do I get round this?

Re: Old DOS Games

It's talking about conventional memory, which I believe is limited to 640k.

If you go to an MS Dos command prompt and type 'mem' it'll give you a readout of your current memory status. EMM was the DOS memory manager which frees up conventional memory by swapping programs into Extended memory, but I'm not sure if that'll work too well with Win98.

Best bet is to use an MS Dos boot disk and run Dos games through that.

Re: Old DOS Games

Code:
mem /c /p
works better actually.

In good old DOSdays there was a nice little tool called MemMaker. Used to optimize your conventional RAM.

You need to load himem.sys and emm386.exe (inside your config.sys), in order to use the DEVICEHIGH command in your config.sys and LOADHIGH in your autoexec.bat for your mouse and soundcard drivers.

Have a nice dos!

Re: Old DOS Games

You could also try DosBox if you don't want to have to boot everytime you play.
