Original suggestion is extremely sane and should be implemented asap.

This, on the other hand, I don't agree with.
We don't run around saying 'I watched the game on my cathode ray tube yesterday' or 'the optical laser reading device transfered the data to the decoder which in turn played the music quite beautifully'.
Warp particle detection actually makes sense as the technology that enables 'fleet analysis scans'. It confers a shred of hard sci-fi credibility to the game, which, seeing as it's a sci-fi game, is pretty healthy. It says right underneath on the research page what the research enables anyway, doesn't it?
