Re: UK's Sneakiest Speed Camera?
Here in the Netherlands they got these mobile cameras they put in cars. The police drive their rusty old Ford Escort with camera equipment to some random place, put it next to the road, and let us innocent people have it.
Bastards!

Re: UK's Sneakiest Speed Camera?
i think that the only problem with that camera is that it is a bit nasty to have it so soon after the 30 sign, but, there again, people should be doing 30 by then anyway, so its their own fault!

Re: UK's Sneakiest Speed Camera?
I think I asked in a different thread if there was any evidence correlating speed cameras and speeding laws with decreased road accidents, but never received any answers.

Re: UK's Sneakiest Speed Camera?
There is large correlation between lower speed limits (and enforcement of same) and higher revenues due to speeding fines. It's basically like printing money for the local authorities.

If they had decent, well thought out speed limits then ppl wouldnt speed as much.
Motorways 80, housing estates bring down to 20.

surely you're not saying a 20mph limit in residential areas is a bad thing?

That would probably be a good idea, but if you think a law needs changing you should tell your MP or petition Parliament or something, not break it and complain that your punishment is unfair.

No - I mean it should replace the 30mph limit as of now.

I agree - but half the time you "speed" without noticing cos the speed limits are crap. I dont think most ppl speed on purpose.

They should take more care when driving, then. If I was hit by someone doing 45 in a 30 because "they didn't notice" I wouldn't be best pleased.
I do think that the fixed penalties are stupid though. They should be graded according to how far over the limit the speeder was going.

The day when everything you do in public, not just how fast you drive, is caught on camera could be only a decade* away. So get used to it.

I'm going to write to my MP and ask him what speed cameras are for because there's plenty of evidence to suggest they are being used primarily to raise revenue rather than save lives.
Any normal driver is going to wander over posted speed limits from time to time, either deliberately or inadvertantly but that doesn't make them a dangerous driver. The dangerous drivers are the ones that drive too fast for the prevailing conditions and surroundings or drive whilst intoxicated etc, or without insurance etc.
I don't disagree with speed cameras in general where they are used as a genuine deterant in accident black spots but it would help if some allowance was made for certain parameters because a dual carriageway near me has a 30 mph limit which is fine at some times but seems rather absurd on a deserted Sunday afternoon, but thats most often when you get the police hiding in the bushes with speed guns trying to meet their targets which is gay, because they know people are more likely to drive at a speed they naturally feel safe and confortable with.
All in all, speed cameras make too much money for it not to be a factor behind the overall policy.
Those responsible - cut it out now.

Exactly, like Jeremy Clarkson said on top gear after talkin to a policeman about speed (was goin to write "on speed" there but thought that'd change the direction of the story a bit, but heh I digress!) they both concluded - it's not those doing 35 in a 30 that cause accidents, its the w*nkers u see swerving over ur rear end (ooh er), overtaking dangerously etc.

Ah, the "speeding's okay because Jeremy Clarkson says so" argument.

If you owned a copyright and somebody stole it even if they had no money or no intention to pay for it under any circumstances you would feel hard done too and therefore a victim.

Generally people dont "have no money" - they have money which they would rather spend elsewhere. Its ludicrous to suggest that most people who claim to "have no money" couldnt afford to buy a CD if they really wanted to.

Of course. For some reason I have all Britney Spears' albums. It's ludicrous to presume I would have bought these if copyright infringement wasn't an option.
Although there are products which I simply couldn't afford to buy if I had to pay money for (3D Studio Max or somehting like that being an example). I've probably got (or had at one stage or another) hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of "pirated" software/music/etc. Considering my lifetime gross income (let alone disposable income) wouldn't have even equalled that, can we say I've realistically deprived the industry of that much cash?

Yeah. If you hadnt pirated them there would have been a gap in market for cheaper products, which might have been filled. However since everyone is using pirated copies of professional quality software, theres no incentive for anyone to produce mid/low pricerange alternatives since noone would buy them.

This is true, but is dealing with hypotheticals which makes the whole notion of victim even more abstracted & weird.
"By pirating software the victim is the hypothetical programmer who would have got a job developing a hypothetical lite version of the software".
(Not that I think people have "rights" over others using their ideas or intellectual products in this fashion, but even within the existing framework it's a weird concept)
