Students: bills inclusive in rent, or not?
Personally, I think this is a good thing.
There are 8 of us living in the Loughborough mansion, and in my room alone these things are left on 24 hours a day, whethere I'm in or out:
* A drinks fridge (no, seriously)
* PC
* 2 monitors belonging to PC (though they turn off after 15 mins)
* 140w surround sound system
* VCR
* Freeview decoder (cos I keep forgetting to turn it off)
* The bedside light (ditto)
* Various low-drain misc things such as the printer, nokia phone charger, etc
Other people's rooms aren't quite so bad, but also around the house is the equipment needed to run a 100Mbit network to all bedrooms plus various "guest" ports around the house for when people want to come over and plug their laptops in. This is basicly 2 eight port switches, a dedicated network server, and the cable modem.
On top of this, we have dual timed and thermostatically controlled central heating - this means we set the timer to 24/7 and then set the thermostat to knock the boiler out when the average temp in the house is a comfy 18C. Hot water is heated on the fly (you turn the tap on, the boiler goes click click click woomph, and hot water comes through a couple of seconds later) so at least that's vaugely environmentally friendly.
In one sense, this is giving us all some very bad habits we'll no doubt regret later in life.
However, I dread to think what all this lot would cost outside of the rent. Obviously the rent would be much reduced, but reduced enough to cover a flatrate water bill, and our rather expansive electricity and gas bills?
How good/bad is your house?

Re: Students: bills inclusive in rent, or not?
We just got an electricity bill that divided by 3 equals 400kr each. That's for 3 months. I'm not complaining. We also forked over 500kr each for wood, to burn in the fireplace. Should last us all winter, and save alot of money on heating.
Edit for those too lazy to XE.com:

We never got round to paying the electricity in our old place (only estimated bills). At last count, the bill was several thousand units over the estimate.

No-one yet. Although it's my name still, so eventually it'll catch up with me I suppose.
p.s. If SbOlly or T&F read this - our old flat has been re-let now I think.
