Re: Holy shit this is the best optical illusion I've ever seen

i had a pretty strange optical illusion as i lay in bed last night. There was a small gap in my curtains in which a small bit of light was coming through. as i stared at the gap, it slowly began to appear to close and the whole room became dark. very strange.

Re: Holy shit this is the best optical illusion I've ever seen
bah humbug
it's just the residual effect of having the same wave length of light blasted at the cells in your eye.
it's a pink dot going around a lot of other pink dots. if you stare at it long enough then your cells get damaged and you'll see a green dot even if you close your damn eyes.
i'm not even a ****ing scientist and even i know it's a load of crap

I have double vision atm so it hasn't worked properly for me...
however, my left eye certainly didnt see the pink dots after a while.
my right eye appears to be harder to fool though, damn it. Impetuous youth.

it's basically playing with the preprocessing of the image in your eye and overexposing it and it takes a while for your eye to refresh the neurotransmitters. It's the same thing as if you stare at something with alot of contrast and then shut your eyes, you can see an imprinted negative.

Well no need to explain the dot illusion that's been covered already. Your one is much more simple to solve.
As your room was obviously dark (or at least darker than outside), the iris in yoru eye was wide open to allow more light so you could see. Once you began staring at the light coming through your curtains your iris had to close a bit more to adjust to this brighter light source. Once it closed down less light was able to enter your eye and the room appeared darker, it also meant the light coming in through the curtain was less noticable and appeared to go away.

I don't really see how this is true. No-one believed it was magic. We are aware it was an optical illusion, although the specifics of how it operated may have been lost on some.
You then went on to say (to summarise) : "That's shit : that's just an optical illusion!" (albeit with a helpful explanation). Which seems to be missing the point somewhat.
Sure, you may not think it's a particularly good optical illusion. You may have seen much better. But that seems a slightly different matter.

It's not working at the moment, probably due to my stinking hangover.
When I try to stare at the frying pan formation of stars it dissapears but if I look just to the side they are visable (explained by what djbass said?).

It uses several different aspects of our visual processing, mainly afterimages (as yahwe/RE said) and the phi phenomenon. There's a brief summary here

hmm, i had a feeling it might have had something to do with my iris, i was sure that when it was happening i could actually feel my iris closing. it made my eyes begin to ache after awhile aswell. thanks for the explanation though dj

Alternatively you could be the reincarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ and it was the first of many 'practice miracles' before the big show.

Re: Holy shit this is the best optical illusion I've ever seen
I tried it, stared at it for a long while, the effect was only minor and lasted all of 2 minutes (after 15 minutes of staring at coloured lines). I say it's an illusion of an illusion, my theory is that it is actually based on memory recall and not the sensory nerves in the eye at all.
