Wireless networking yo

Im curious to know this :

If you have a decent speed line (i.e. 10meg in and 384 up or somesuch) and you were to stick on a wireless router and then slap some repeaters and access points about a large building.....do you necessarily need to tell the broadband company that you are networking multiple computers in the building or does this kind of thing HAVE to be done as though it was commercial network?

Re: Wireless networking yo

I don't think so?
My school used to have a few phone lines devoted to ISDN or something, and as far as I know we never had that registered specially.

Tell them if they ask. It's not like you're going to be 'sub-letting' the connection or anything.

For example an apartment block::

If one dude had the actual line coming into his apartment and then he let everyone share it within the block would that have to be reported or somesuch?

Only if he charged them, I think. I don't know, read the ToC of your ISP

Re: Wireless networking yo

Your ISP's TOC will probally state how many machines you can have on your connection. If your not exceeding it then you dont need to tell them, if you are dont think about telling them as they will probally force you to switch to a commercial line

You are breaking your TOC doing that in most cases. The contracts with the occupier of the home that the the wired line comes into. If they found you doing that youd lose your connection altogether

Re: Wireless networking yo

Two things that spring to mind are:

1) You could be accused of making a profit from the connection (Ie charging other users for their internet connection - would expect this to be a breach of T's and C's)

2) Your bandwidth usage with the ISP is monitored and they may notice unusually high activity (Whether the monthly usage is capped or not).

this sounds like the best plan to me, i must admit at this point that my wireless network at home isnt encrypted, although that is out of sheer curiosity to see if anyone tries to use it, which then never have

Re: Wireless networking yo

im not stealing anyones connection...

It would be paid for by 'everyone' in the block of flats and id be using that new MIMO gear stuff and id guess around 5/6 access points connected to a central router or possible two central routers. I have to there first and do some 'testing' to see how many will be needed.

I looked at Zen internet and its 80 quid for a business line which provides 8meg down and 834kb up and unlimited bandwidth...which should be enough for 15-20 ish computers/laptops.

(We own a flat in the block and i was asked if could throw together a wireless network for everyone)

Re: Wireless networking yo

heh no. there was a meeting for the people who own apartments there and the internet came up. i said 'why not just set the whole place up for wireless. it would probably work out much cheaper in the long run after the initial installation costs and it could be secured..'

well I suppose you could always set it up as a pseudo business - after all, there are internet cafe's that have wireless in them. the details will be in the contract you sign though.

Re: Wireless networking yo

Yeah thats something im looking into right now. Thing is i cant seem to find anything that isnt cisco £££££££ to balance up multiple connections.

Maybe if i buy a normal load balancing router which only cost around 150 quid. then plug in a wireless access point directly into it with this new mimo crap in it it will work.

Advice would be helpful tho....

Re: Wireless networking yo

ill move it now as its got more 'technical' but the original question didnt really fall under IT support stuff. it was more a 'anyone know the rules on this kind of thing'

HOWEVAR YOU AER CORRECT!

Could you go into a bit more detail as to whats involved.

possibly with a pretty diagram. The most wireless networking ive ever done is throughout the house and thats basically cable modem -> wireless router -> downstairs access point

This seems far more 'tricksy'

examples of the hardware too would be ace.

Atm im thinking it goes something like this but correct me if im wrong

ADSL Line in -> ADSL Modem -> Linux Box with bandwidth monitoring stuff and line sharing stuff on it also dhcp server for assigning the ips to the network. -> Wireless access point -> wireless access point -> wireless etc etc etc etc

Re: Wireless networking yo

All you should technically need is a few waps strategically placed throughout the complex. You guy would have shit for speed though. Maybe doing 2 wireless lans would be more efficient.
