more fun in the middle east

israel threatens to attack iraq and equiped some submarines (which we gave them as a gift after gulf war I) with nuclear weapons.

looks like the large parking lot plan some people here mentioned finally comes true.

You mean Iran, surely? (Somebody buy wu a score card! )

Don't really see how this changes much. Israel certainly has enough delivery systems to nuke Iran now, if they really wanted to. The only real advantage of putting nukes on submarines is to survive a potential first strike by the other side. Basic Cold War stuff, really.

Re: more fun in the middle east

yes, iran, i was somewhat in a hurry and i typed iraq more often in the last month.
the submarine-story is somewhat independent of the lets attak iran sory. they want to attack iran to destroy its nuclear program. at the same time they deveop new nuclear weapns on their own. noone seems to have a probelm with that.

Re: more fun in the middle east

"The newspaper said the submarines were presented to Israel at low or symbolic prices, to encourage Israel's government to be more obstinate."

good plan

"In May 2000 Israel is reported to have secretly carried out its first test launches from two German-built Dolphin-class submarines of cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The missiles launched from vessels off Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean are said to have hit a target at a range of about 1,500 kilometers [about 930 statute miles]. Israel is reported to possess a 200kg nuclear warhead, containing 6kg of plutonium, that could be mounted on cruise missiles."

fun fun

Re: more fun in the middle east

these arent nuclear submariens (i.e. submarines with a nuclear engine). we dont even have such submarines on our own.
neither are the rockets they use made for nuclear warheads, they usually are too small for that task. but israel seems to have found a way to do it anyway.
i wonder if we can repair the damage if we now sell anti aircraft weapons to syria and iran

Those Israelis are sneaky. ;-) This slightly off topic paragraph entertained me.: "United States inspectors visited Dimona seven times during the 1960s, but they were unable to obtain an accurate picture of the activities carried out there, largely due to tight Israeli control over the timing and agenda of the visits. The Israelis went so far as to install false control room panels and to brick over elevators and hallways that accessed certain areas of the facility. The inspectors were able to report that there was no clear scientific research or civilian nuclear power program justifying such a large reactor - circumstantial evidence of the Israeli bomb program - but found no evidence of "weapons related activities" such as the existence of a plutonium reprocessing plant."
