WHAT I LIKE ABOUT:
Heavy rolling type machines (for road building) in your lane right infront of you when you are trying to get onto a very busy roundabout - Nothing
People who have halogen lights on their car - Nothing
People who keep their lights on full beam no matter what - Nothing
People who only switch off their full beams a second after you have been blinded by them - Nothing
People who drive SUVS and 4 wheel drive monster type cars (like the BMW X5) on narrow streets and who give you a heart attack when they are driving towards because of the minimal seperation between your cars - Nothing
People who drive at 40mph for a long stretch of a 60mph road which doesn't allow for overtaking - Nothing
Cyclists who dress in black and believe that one small flashing red light at the back of their bike is enough to warn approaching traffic that they are there and that reflective clothing is as such a bad idea (or something) - Nothing
The council which allows people to park their cars on a very narrow stretch of road (when there is a car park on the other side of the road which the people could use) which means that you have to have inch perfect judgement every time you use the road otherwise you and the oncoming traffic are going to collide - Nothing
People who park RIGHT ON THE BEND OF A ROAD - Nothing

How is a flashing red light not enough to warn you that someone is there? If still more or less daylight, you can see the bike right there, and if its dark the red light just shows up more.

sorry to disagree, but if you are out on a bike at night, you should never have black on, also, i think that its actually illegal not to have a permanently on light rather than a flashing one on your bike over here as well.

I guess you never drove a car in the dark. You are VERY mistaken. On a dark road, with other cars coming towards you with their lights on... you BARELY see a small red flashing light.
No seriously, wear light clothing, even if it makes you uncool.

This post serves as my argument against why flashing red lights are not enough for cyclists.

I know how to drive.
When the wideness of the other car means that you only have a two inch clearance on either side of your car (ie to the parked cars on one side and the **** off wide car on the other) you tend to get a bit pissed off at unnecessarily wide cars.
Especially when their full beams shining in your eyes makes judging distances even more difficult.

Put on your sunglasses
or gently touch their SUVs with your left mirror - that does work wonders!
or save up some money and by one of those unnecessarily wide cars yourself
or improve your ability to judge distances

Re: [rant]
SUV's should be banned IMO.
The bumperheight of these cars make them in accidents with smaller vehicles very deadly. They simply walz right over any protective zones (like rollbars or impact-absorbtion -zones, or whatever you call those things) and go straight for the man inside.
Also their height, as Dace mentioned, makes their lights shine directly in your eyes.
I once drove in a mates 15year old peugeot 205 (small french road-cake), and I can tell you it's hell if you get trucks or any vehicle with significantly more ground-clearance coming towards you.

Re: [rant]
SUV's are ****in dangerous on the roads as mentioned with the bumpers and those big bastard metal bars on the front.
as far as i know cyclists lights are illegal if they are flashing, theyre also a major pain in the arse when you come accross them. they are hard to see sometimes, usually when the area around them is light.. i.e. on lit up roads, which is where youre going to see 100% of these people because they dont think how dangerous it is, only sensible people are gonna ride elsewhere

I think the front light needs to be non-flashing, but the rear one can be.

Re: [rant]
the rear ones are the worst IMO, especially been as if youre only going to see them on someone whos travelling on YOUR side of the road.... its more risky then passing someone on the other side

Actually, it would appear I'm incorrect - according to various sources the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 seems to prohibits flashing lights of any kind outside of indicators and the emergency services.
But then again, apparently LED lights on bicycles are also "technically" illegal but their use is widespread.

But flashing ones are easier to spot than constant ones. I just don't get the strange and weird laws of your country.

I disagree.
Also ...
Reflective road markings do not exist as a continuous strip.
As such when the light from your car "picks them out" on the road you get what amounts to a series of "flashing lights" (as it picks up one after another markings).
Now i appreciate that only certain parts of the road have red reflective markings but they are still there.
Now think flashing red lights could be the road or it could be a cyclist.
Now think about this situation when you are being blinded by the lights of oncoming traffic.
Having to take the time to figure out if the flashing red light is a cyclist who can't be arsed wearing reflective clothing or just the road is FUN FUN FUN!!!

Comedy 'make the road wear reflective clothing' option.
