What is it with this nation's obsession with affairs?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/040816/344/f0e10.html
Ok, Mr. Blunkett had an affair, big deal. It's supposed to be private and if it got exposed must the media make a big thing out of it?
The amount of affairs being exposed within this year alone is absolutely ridiculous.

No wonder the headline writers are going bananas. Boom Boom Boris is on the front pages again!

surely it's only an 'affair' if Blunkett was already in a relationship, which afaik he wasn't?

We have stupid attitudes to marriage and sexual relationships in general. Is it any wonder this stupidity is scaled up?

Yah people are so needy and desperate and so polluted with soulless capitalism these days they can no longer form meaningful faithful relationships and hence the high rate of infidelity these days.
If only kids(and adults lol) these days would take more care about dating, building relationships and being more open rather than letting media and the false sense of beauty that pollutes our eyes constantly throw off our instincts into superficial wonderland where mistakes will be made.

I don't know what's more terrifying - the fact that Erin's going to marry you (say hey to her btw) or the thought of you in a kilt :|

Kura's private life doesnt get discussed here, or there, or anywhere. Anyone with enough sense knows the single worst place to mention anything about a partner is here.
Although i admit, Erin has escaped relatively unscathed despite your reputation, whilst Emma is the talk of the town thanks to Skiddy's reputation .... quite amusing really

I used to play the bagpipes ta.
It won't be a proper wedding do, just something to get the piece of paper to make immigration process easier, we'll have a proper wedding sometime later when we can afford it, just at the now we are comfortable with the notion of marriage just don't have the finances to do it how we would like in the occasional not the superficial sense.

To be fair kura, none of the women you've mentioned here get's scathed either, I think it comes down to wether you are dating an attention whoring on the internet livejournal bint or not.
p.s. To further derail this thread, here's a pic of me and erin this summer. I still haven't learned how to smile right, I blame brain damage from alcohol.
Erin then whined about being fat in that photo and has dropped a few pounds since, jogging every morning and doing my laundry and cooking and well I live like a lord :P

Good pic. Youre actually looking considerably slimmer despite the large volumes of free food and drink and no exercise.
Still as Ginger as Nod though. No excuses, get a haircut hippy!

Yah well I haven't eaten much saturated fats or meat or junk food at all of late, my diet is particularly based around the fact that vegetarianism here is damn cheap and that crisps and confectionaries are the only things that AREN'T cheap here.

I think you must have missed the memo where capitalism was declared the objectively best system of economics.
PS In all honesty I recognise you have some different opinions to the mainstream GD clique (you know what I mean heh) but that sounded like it was ripped out of the bowels of some mindless hypocritical "here's an original idea, let's tell people what they want to hear!!" News of the World hack.

Re: What is it with this nation's obsession with affairs?
I agree it's objectively the best system, Doesn't mean it doesn't have massive flaws.
We weren't talking about capitalism as system of economics but more how the capitalist mindset applies to beauty and relationships subjecting them to market forces i.e. dump what you have got the second something better comes along.

Re: What is it with this nation's obsession with affairs?
That's a fault of perceptions though. Clearly you should choose the (subjectively) better option for you. The fact some people think that they have to change is a personal problem. As well as this if it's what pleases you I don't see you shouldn't change girl/boyfriends every other week. Unless you're going to come up with some moral fabric of society stuff that I don't agree with!

Enviromental conditioning.
I don't have it at hand but investigate the divorce/infidelity rates in male lecturers/high school teachers for example.

Monday 16th August - "Blunkett criticises attack on privacy"

Environmental conditioning is a load of crap though. You can claim if any wide number of factors were changed at an earlier stage in various individuals' lives that whatever adverse consequences you're worried about would not occur. As well as this, as I stated, I don't have a problem with divoce or infidelity.

Designed (in built) redundancy (or whatever the cool kid word for it is) sucks cancer.
Consumerism is about buying things you don't really need.
The worst aspect of consumerism is "them" making you buy things you don't really need again and again and again just because they design a product so it cant last.

Re: What is it with this nation's obsession with affairs?
you forgot to add [/fightclub] or [/ChuckPalahniuk] to your last post there Dace.
Btw on the topic of Fight Club I've been delving into my thoughts of how the movie cross relates to the book in a strange manner, the point to the end of the book was making people wake up in the same manner as the human sacrifices, where as the movie took a rather different twist which produced altogether a much more attention grabbing movie it'd also attract people to the book, like making people wake up to the Fight Club book specifically which delivers it's message very very well and definately better than the movie.

I've shut my irc window and cant be arsed to check my logs but the quote i'm looking for went something like:
<nodrog> i've questioned you on consummerism
<nodrog> reply without quoting Fight Club
So i did.
(as such adding those tags would have been gay)

Re: What is it with this nation's obsession with affairs?
Is there any actual evidence that infidelity (i.e screwing around - not necessarily divorces etc) is actually higher now compared to in the past? From literautre, etc - it seems a constant theme that people have always wanted to have sex with lots of different people.
While I dislike the alienating effects of capitalism/consumerism as much as anyone else, I doubt it can be "blamed" (if that's even appropriate) for infidelity.

We live in a surveillance society. 100 years ago, you wouldnt have been spotted nipping into a house of Ill repute in a town 250 miles away. Today if youre famous, its in the papers, and if youre not, you have to hope you dont have a jealous partner that hires PI's.

The fact that many people in the western world (one assumes he doesn't mean everybody everywhere) are needy and desperate, I generally agree, or the fact that they're polluted with capitalism, I generally agree, or that they can't form meaningful relationships due to this, I generally disagree?

If only kids(and adults lol) these days would take more care about dating, building relationships and being more open rather than letting media and the false sense of beauty that pollutes our eyes constantly throw off our instincts into superficial wonderland where mistakes will be made.

The fact that people should be more open about dating and building relationships, general vague agreement (as I only have experience within a limited age group)? Or that the media and false sense of beauty (does this come from the media? I don't get why it's mentioned separately) throw off our instincts, generally disagree as instinct is not what we need to rely on to create meaningful relationships?

I think you should just ditch the quote-of-the-day thing altogether.

[i]Buying books would be a good thing if one could also buy the time to read them in: but as a rule the purchase of books is mistaken for the appropriation of their contents.[/quote]
What's wrong with that children?
