Opensource pure PHP based SNMP monitoring tool
What is the market for such a tool? At school we made this kind of tool that allows one to monitor webservers, printers and everything else with SNMP, and there are plans to continue development.
I was just wondering what the need for such a tool is. We found a lot of commercial products, but few free ones. And even fewer based on PHP (just one).
So, how usefull would one such tool be?

If you're buying network monitoring tools for your business you're more likely to go for a tried, tested, polished commercial product than use something off Sourceforge. And I can't think of a single reason why any home or small-business user would need SNMP monitoring.

Newsbot, I wanted to know if any of you we're familiar with other, good, free SNMP tools. Or knew if there are enough of such tools around. Aparently not.
And Pab, I can understand your point. It's indeed not very likely that anyone will use a free, specialised tool.

I guess I have to think if I really want to continue developing it. Some of my classmates are really interrested in it, but I'm a bit more sceptical.

I might set up a demo on my website so I can show it around a bit, and have others give input on if it has any future. Will have to set up the database first tho.

A suggestion might be to ask around. Find mates who work in IT depts of SMEs and see if they can ask whether or not SNMP monitoring is used at all in the company, whether its a bespoke solution or an off-the-shelf commercial product and decide from there.

I started out doing something very basic along these lines using a simple TCP connect to verify that a service is still up and accepting connections. Judging by the email I get asking when the next version will appear (v1 was basically a service status page like the one PA has/had) then they'll kill for an SNMP version!

Plus it means you get to play with things like signal handling which is always fun
