and entirely because mr brett was doing an awful lot of heroin at the time and left the band and kicked them off the label, and they needed something to do with this album and a half they'd just recorded without releasing (Stranger than Fiction, The Gray Race).

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
so if emo is just emotional music with guitars et all, surely someithing like temple of the dog's album, which was written by cornell for a friend of the soundgarden/pearl jam lot (before either band existed), the original singer of motherlovebone, would be the best emo stuff (because its not shit like blink and its emotional).
Or am I just missing the point a bit

You people broke my heart (not all).
I mean classifying those songs as emo (not that they're bad) is a treason to the genre.

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
im simply amazed that i never replied to this thread
HIM should be shot and buried in shallow graves however, simply for the fact that 200million annoying little goth wannabees have HIM hoodies in my town now and they just irritate me, in fact the only people who have annoyed me more (musically) lately were the bunch of motley crue fans who kept trying to make the DJ play some motley crue, even after we threatened them with death and/or serious mockery

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
Emo is gothic/heavy metal rock that "emo's" listen to, they usually have annual wrist slitting days....but anyway, yeh thats basically emo. Its full term is emotionally filled music, in this case its hate/anger/death/i hate you all.
Lovely people.

Oh so basically its just kids trying to seem cool I take it, with a slightly different brand of music but in order to be accepted you need to wear a pair of cons, tight black jeans and not wash?

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
I'm just looking for a word that describes those sorts of bands (ones I like), but can't be tarnished with garish words like emo and to a lesser extent indie.

in what way is 'indie' a tarnish? apart from the darkest depths of the scenesters, i can't really think of any negative stereotypes about indie fans, and plainly you don't appear to object to the music.

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
I've been listening to Kerrang in the car a fair bit recently, and some of the emo songs they play are quite catchy.
Sugar w're going down is good, although since the animation-thing, I can;t help but laugh. I write sins not tragedies (Panic at the Disco) is rather catchy too.
On a similar, but not quite the same, note, what do the music-afficianados amongst us think to No Tomorrow (Orson)? It's on the radio so much that it starts to grate now, but for what is essentially a pop song, it's not too bad.

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
There's a lot of indie music I like, probably most, it's just there's a slight stigma about indie kids and how they dress at our university. But emo is much much worse, music-wise aswell.

In a featured-on-the-OC sort of way, it's entirely acceptable indie rock. in a featured-on-the-OC sort of way, it is unlikely I would pay money to see them.

It's kind of a guilty pleasure, I hate them and the song, but it just seems catchy.

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
"Indie" isnt really a genre; the term is far too broad (the same applies to rock really). Id say The Strokes, Feeder etc were guitar based rock or something like that.

Re: Greatest ever 'Emo' song
http://www.fourfa.com/ provides a decent rundown of the history of Emo.
Recently the meaning of the word has been diluted somewhat from a small, obscure genre of music started in the 80's as an offspring of hardcore, to pretty much whatever you want it to mean.
My theory is that some independant American rock bands that made it big in the late 90's identified themselves as emo (*cough* Jimmy Eat World *cough*). Then a sleuth of other, similar bands started identifying as such, thus the term came into more common use. Then, through a misunderstanding of the history of the genre, internet memes, and the rise of Myspace and generally of girly men, pretty much made the word what it is today.
