Well, this is pretty true but you could look at it from another point of view:
Lets face it, you can all cooperate, turn the race for #1 into a bunfight where asc might not win and you might. Or play as you are and get some planet ranks, which really are dictated by how much incoming you get and how much defence you receive. And you'll be no better than Angels and ND fighting against exilition and 1up - two alliances more than capable of winning, if they'd ever managed to cooperate.
As I've said before, planet ranks were once expressions of power and counted in terms of 'winning', but even on that count, Ascendancy is winning by a substantial margin. So you're not winning even by your alternative count.
