Sex Education
In light of the recent change in the Scottish curriculum, where primary school children in primary 3 and 4 will be told what sex is and how it works.
I remember many moons ago the dreaded PSE class where our 50 year old bearded guidance teacher started talking about sex, and the nurse came in with phallic objects of varying sizes to demonstrate how to put a condom on.
Apparently now, as part of the changes to the curriculum, new inclusions are
Oral sex, techniques and precautions
Being homosexual.
Non hetrosexual sex, techniques precautions and risks.
These extra additions will be taught to 15-16 year olds in school.
All of this is a result of multiple focus groups, starting wth the McGabe group in 2000.
Personally I think greater awareness is a good thing, but the actual manner in which these new subjects will be taught intrigues me.
I'm curious as to what the sex education in other countries is like.
insert personal horror stories etc below....

Re: Sex Education
I wouldn't be so against this if it weren't for the thought of TomKat explaining oral sex to 8 year old. Oh sweet jesus, now I've thought about MM explaining it.

Re: Sex Education
If you have sex with fifteen virgins in a week you get the power-up to the next level and become black.

Well, sensible americans look at the scientific evidence which shows that teaching abstinance doesn't decrese the number of teenagers having sex, but merely decreses the number of them having protected sex, and understand that this means that teaching abstinance is a "bad thing".

the RC school i went to pretended it didnt exist. You went in for Personal & Social Development classes for 2 hours a week and basically found it was a disguised vehicle for the Religious Education classes they stopped giving when you finished 2nd year.
Did 3 years in Private School after that, they dont give a donkeys toss about it.

You could always follow the Yahwe / MM / Phang / Silversmoke method , none of the abovementioned problems in that one.

On the topic of who picks what is appropriate.
the scottish executive implemented changes following several focus groups, leadig from the McGabe group enquiry in 2000.
"Ministers invited a range of professionals working in the field, including representatives of the teaching profession, the Church of Scotland, the Catholic Education Commission, the Scottish School Boards Association, the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, the Health Education Board for Scotland and the Centre for Education in Racial Equality in Scotland. The Group made a number of recommendations including the requirement to provide guidance to schools on SRE and effective consultation with parents."

AKA...One big tea and biscuit party.
The "prody" or Non dominational Schools would have less resistence to it.
The hardline catholics would be going off their nut about the use of contraception. I am surprised that it went ahead.
Sex education for the girls... Life as a "giromaw" for a week.
Sex education for the boys... CSA taking their drink/fag money for a week.
Could follow the week before the kids have their week of work experience.
On the serious side it might be a good idea.

Re: Sex Education
here in america, in addition to our brilliant abstinence education i recently discovered that they are "teaching kids not to do drugs." in first grade (5 year olds).
anyway, all of that pales in comparison to the opposition in the bush administration to the new cancer vaccine.

Re: Sex Education
I dont understand how people can believe that porn/certain-forms-of-sex are dehumanizing and yet not feel the same about a middleaged teacher/nurse explaining sex to a group of teenagers in a school-classroom. The whole thing is horrific and really needs to be scrapped at every level.

I don't see the link between dehumanised sex, and a teacher telling kids about sex.
Why does it need to be scrapped? Who would you have teach them? The teachers are responsible adults who the kids (hopefully) look up to. They're there to give them the facts, not talk about the best sexual position.

I'd imagine the only people who are against porn but still for sex education are feminists, since most evangelical religious types would probably oppose both.

I remember hearing the factoid that the higher your IQ, the later you lose your virginity (although this mainly applies to males). Given this, I doubt many on GD had much need for sex education when they were 12 or 13. However, for a lot of people it seems like a useful skill so you don't make a mistake very early on in life which could have repurcussions later on.

Well, theres a difference betwen generic 'good advice' ("try not to get pregnant; here is how"), and the attempts at normalizing/regimenting sexual attitudes/practices that tends to underpin most sex-ed style topics.

How can you be so ignorant?
I know it was a while ago, but do you not remember school or how you were at 12-14?
There are so many myths and falsities in the playground (and at home, from uneducated parents), that kids need to know things like the options they have if they get pregnant, the options they have to stop getting pregnant (in terms of contraception), why they should use condoms and not just "pull out", and just about shit like wet dreams and periods.
Imagine there was no education at school about this, and the parents were too embarassed to talk about it. What do you think a girl will do when she suddenly starts bleeding down below? Talk to her mates? Fat chance. Same goes for a boy who ejaculates all over his bedsheets.

Re: Sex Education
It'll help clear up what daddy does to them when they go home.
Don't you ****ing look at me like that, there had to be an attempt at a funny somewhere.
The victorian morality that we've been brought up on has ****ed up our crazy little minds and hasn't done anyone any good. Sex is as natural a process as taking a shit, infact if the internet is to be believed the germans have linked the two concepts. Those crazy huns. The doctors and nurses games that kids play at that age shows that kids do know something is up with those bits down there.
Aside from anything else, im always in favour of greater education concerning everything, we should do what yahwe once suggested, play god and make them pregnant. Whole families can go to school together.

I must admit I've never met a parent who was too embarassed to talk to their children about sex before they hit puberty. Maybe we should look at removing various prejudices from people's minds instead of teaching in a school. As I recall they got in some fat 50 year old man in my school to talk to us for a few one hour lectures. I think the only thing I learnt during that class was a few different names to call your cock. Nor was I an atypical student in that sense.
PS In a slight tangent off boogster's point I'd like to see parents (or teachers if we're on that still) tell their children that everything is perfectly acceptable as long as it's consensual.

Yeah but these forums don't exactly hit a wide demographic of the population.
For the most part we're white middle class with decent educations and pretty intelligent. A lot of that we probably have, thanks to our parents. Which in turn probably comes because they're responsible and mature.

Logically some responsible and mature people just sprang into existence a few thousand years ago! I'm not sure what your point is though. If anything I would have thought that while middle class parents would be more likely to be embarrassed than a lot of other demographics.
