Got it yesterday. Utterly brilliant.

Normal timescale seemed a bit too fast for me (though it would be ace for multiplayer). Thankfully they have included the traditional epic timescale for slower longer games.

The globe view is very useful and aesthetically pleasing - screenshots do not do the engine justice.

It feels like Civilization.

that sounds like a good thing to me, having the ambiguity of the advisors when it could instead give you the actual numbers always seemed a bit of a waste of time.

Sorry, no.

With the (warezed) DVD version you have to use Daemon Tools and then SafeDisc Hider - there's no crack included. I'm not sure about the CD version.

I started playing this last night (thanks to you lot), having never played the prequels. Seems it's a cross between Settlers and mega-lo-mania

The most annoying thing was struggling to sleep afterwards because of a scrolling landscape ingrained in my mind.

After about 4 hours play, I'm at 1700AD on the tutorial map living in peace next to that fag Ghandi but despite our peaceful co-existence and my enlightened pacifist outlook, I'm really ****ing annoyed at the way the border has turned out and how he has cities in what should have been my land if I'd known what I was doing a millenia or two earlier. Tonight I think I'm going to have to try and kick his smug specky head in.

So yeah, on the whole, I'd say I was enjoying it

Silvresmoke: so far I've been lucky, but it is widely acknowledged the game wasn't tested enough before it was released.
So much so that apparently Fireaxis are releasing a patch next week - that has to be some kind of record!

on topic : I played a SIX HOUR team multiplayer game (3v3 on Noble) vs the computer on sat night, and we kicked it's arse.

The other 4 team games we played it's declared war early and owned us lots

I wouldn't know about 4, but in pretty much all other games of this type, early wars are the way to go if you are going for the best score/win. I don't see any particular reason why this would be different.

I was pretty shocked there wasn't a patch out in the first few days, pretty rare for a game these days especially one as unstable as Civ 4. Still despite the crashs it's incredible

That's not uncommon. The process of "going gold" and getting shipped to shops takes so damn long that, by and large, any bugs, no matter how minor, that are found towards the end of the QA process CAN'T be fixed before released, because in doing so they have to go through the game again from scratch. The time between going gold and release is often more than sufficient to do more testing, and fix some errors - the only limit on this appears to be the publisher.

In fact, Firaxis (are you on some kind of bad-spelling drive in this thread?) are being positively tardy, especially given the godawful number of bugs to affect the game.

On the plus side, at least it WAS tested before release - the main problem with Civ III was that it wasn't playtested. At all.

Yeah I just played this for the last 3 hours (got it today) and beat it on chieftan by winning the space race. I went totally pacificst and only constructed military when a city asked me to. I like the menu music *a lot.*

im getting this for christmas from my brother and i cannot understand how you could possibly be pacifists?

After making pacts and alliances on civ3 that catered to my needs at the time, as soon as those needs were met and there was no reason for the alliance to hold id break it off usually by invading en masse and annhilating their cities and towns.

War is the way to go gentleman. You will be hated by all but who cares when they all fear you?

On the other hand, this requires you to have an enormous standing militiary, especially in Civ IV, which is hideously inefficient.

I really love the menu music song so I found some stuff out by searching on Google.

It's called "Baba Yetu"and is an African rendition of the Lord's prayer.

I really like it, it's so upbeat. I'm glad I don't understand the words though, I'd probably like it a lot less.

Build up troops, make peace with everyone, then move all your troops at once to the nearest place and take half their cities, then go to the next place and do it there too. Don't worry about settling as you'll just conquer cities. Yeah! (Haven't tried this yet tbh).

It is also still hopelessly unstable on some computers even after the patch.
Take2 really need to learn the idea of QC before they go releasing games so important as this.

Other than that it is fairly cool.
Also, for anyone wanting to know what the menu music is, it is apparently the Lord's Prayer in Swahili.
