Last year on holiday some English people thought I was Turkish. Most people manage to guess I'm Welsh and considering I was speaking in English and am extremely pale I was stunned with the nationality they thought I was.

No americans seem to pick up my English accent. I always get "where are you from?" "England" "no, ur kiddin right?" "yes.. i'm kidding.... .... " even though I have a relatively english accent, infact some might even say i'm posh (although that's just because i speak standard english) *sigh*

I don't think being unfamiliar with an accent type makes someone particularly stupid.

People's dialects are a bit messed up anyway because a lot of people pick up speech patterns from immigrant cultures or movies, music, etc. It's not uncommon for a middle class kid from London to use Jamaican words which their parents wouldn't understand in the slightest.

anyway i havent got an accent if i want to, but i noticed that when i come back from work and mingled with a lot of locals my accent is there, maybe even a bit forced, but if i am a few hours under for instance people from the south i pick up their accent.
