So , erm , Golf. It looks pretty simple, right?
Having just decided to take up Golf (Something i promised myself id do when i came here 2 years ago) and bought my first set of clubs, im going to need to get some practice in and learn the techniques and etiquettes of the courses.
Anyone got any tips other than "Hit the ball really hard towards the hole"?

its not as easy as it looks
keep your head still
feet apart in line with shoulders. knees ever so slightly bent
keep your head down and dont fall into temptation of following ball immediately.

Re: So , erm , Golf. It looks pretty simple, right?
Tip 1, get some pro training, it helps. I got mine free with a junior membership .
Look straight down at the ball when addressing the shot and keep your head very still. Dont move your head to follow the ball when you hit it, stay looking down at the grass where the ball was till you have finished your swing, if you start moving your head you will mess up your shot.
Dont try to hit the ball hard, or do a full swing. If you are swinging past you rhead you are swinging back too far. You dont need to put a lot of power into a shot to make it go a long way, as long as you connect sweetly you will get the distance.
Dont bother with 2/3/4 irons either for now. They are a bitch touse on the fairway, just stick to something like a 5 or 6 iron to give you more chance of hitting it nicely and getting a decent distance rather than just fluffing a 3 or 4 iron.

And if you can't get it together you can still use your set of clubs to beat burglars out of your house.

Re: So , erm , Golf. It looks pretty simple, right?
Play like you think you should play. If you concentrate too much you'll slice it or hook it.
Let your swing go naturally, but take into account JC's guidance too.
It's difficult, but you'll get the hang of it quite quickly. Then all you need to worry about is shot type and accuracy.
Try to spend a few sessions on the ranges to get a feel for the clubs, then try maybe the front or back nine and see how it goes.
Good luck

Got them through a guy in my brothers work. Not a "Brand" but TBH , as a starter set theyll do nicely.

not gonna happen kura.
best thign to do is get pro coaching so that you can get all the strokes down first because that it is the hardest part, once you can stroke with every club proficently, the rest you should hopefully pick up with experience and stuff.

Re: So , erm , Golf. It looks pretty simple, right?
Forget to mention.
Use the interlocking grip to hold the club rather than cricket bat style grip.
If you are right handed:
Little finger of your right hand inside the first finger of your left hand. Then close your grip round the shafft of the club and both your thumbs should be pointing directly down towards the blade of the club. You'll probably find it a bit uncomfortable to start with but it is a much more stable grip then just putting 2 hands on separately.
You can probably find some pics of it with google to explain it better than me.
Legs should be shoulder width apart as well.

Re: So , erm , Golf. It looks pretty simple, right?
Back in my golfing days I always did best when concentrating on getting a good swing rather than a strong swing. You won't get it on the green on a par 5 course that way but you'll do a lot better than just whacking it hard as you can. Only after a few months (probably years if you're crap as I was) should you start thinking about power.

Re: So , erm , Golf. It looks pretty simple, right?
if you find your lame at golf just hire the buggys and speed around (btw they do tip over if you steer to hard whilst going to fast)
but apart from that
1. feet shoulder width apart
2. interlocking grip (like JC said)
3. knees slightly bent
4. back straight
thats all i remember really. i think when you swing, one of your arms stays bent or something like that
hope some of that helped

Your left arm (if you are right handed) should stay straight all the way through the backswing. If it bends you are over swinging. Your rght arm has to bend otherwise you'ld have problems swinging at all .

It was something like 20 quid for half an hour at the course i was a member of, so that sounds like a good price.

Re: So , erm , Golf. It looks pretty simple, right?
i hate woods. either A) my ball doesn't get off the ground, and only gets about 75 yards before rolling to a stop or (usually) B) it launches forward, going perfectly in the preferred direction at great speed and looks to set me up nicely. the after about 175 yards in the air, it makes a right ( or left) turn and is never seen again. Of course at a driving range I hit nothing but perfectly straight 260 yarders with any wood.
I three iron anymore. 190-230 yards a stroke, and goes where I damn well want to.
