Also, I just thought (reading that article). They're planning on selling them as disposable right, and there's no additional copy protection before they black out. So what's to stop them being ripped as normal? It takes about 30 minutes tops to extract the DVD files off a DVD onto your harddrive - once you've got them there you can play them off the drive, or convert them to DivX if you've got 24 hours of processor time to spare.
Surely this is just going to provide people with an even cheaper way to pirate movies - now you don't even have to pay the retail price!

Idi, it took my XP2000+ about 24 hours to DivX encode one of our home-made DVDs (yes, we were daft enough to lose the source DV footage).
Admittedly that was with all the settings rammed up to high quality using the 5.1 Pro codec, and it was a 2-pass encode (so a 'standard' 1-pass would have taken about 12 hours), but it was only a 1 hour film.

It dont matter about new technology, DVD's were designed to have the data coded on each seperate disk as there is no known way of copying a DVD, That is why they are so expensive.

Crashtester, what in god's name are you talking about?
I assume you're rambling about CSS encryption, which was broken years ago and has been in court more times than you can count.

So even if you couldn't, for whatever reason, just make a direct image of the DVD and burn it back to a blank one (same as copying a CD), you just decrypt the files to your harddrive and then burn them back again with the correct path layout etc.

Decryption is not actually required to copy them, it just makes things easier if you want to mess about with the content. Decryption is only required for playback, and DeCSS was created because only "authorized" companies have the decryption algorithms to put in thier DVD settop boxes or PC DVD software.
Specifically, DeCSS was originally created for Linux, since (obviously) the movie companies weren't about to give away the decryption knowhow just so it could be distributed freely. Anyway, you wouldn't be able to distribute something like that under the GPL, whereas this way you can.
DeCSS 'simply' (ie. it's a damn sight harder than it sounds) reverse engineered the encryption.

The actual process of ripping (i.e. reading DVD data, saving them to disk [.vob and .ifo files]) only takes about 15mins (for roughly 6GB, which can be more then a normal 90min film).

Ok, you can put motion estimate search etc to very high (= high quality / very slow), and 2pass takes twice as long, sure.
But I seriously doubt you can't get the same effect in less time!
I got an Athlon 1200Mhz, and 12hours is about what I need.

If you want high quality, you set the bitrate high enough anyway, and motion estimate doesn't really make a huge difference then anymore.

Also, you might wanna add more keyframes. (Nice effect: seeking becomes a lot more comfortable, too).

And if you want highest quality, you can use high CONSTANT bitrate (i.e. 6 or 8mbps) single pass encoding anyway.
Keep in mind, DV has 25mbps or even 30...







So, to rip a DVD, you need to actually "have" it (readable) for less than half an hour.
Imagine how much this "protection" might work...
