These are not really inovative are they? They are just improvements or already existing elements put in to make the game a bit more different then others.

I DIDN'T SAY ALL PLATFORMERS WERE BAD, JUST THAT SOME IN EVERY ERA WILL BE TERRIBLE. YOU'RE NOT CONSTRUCTING A COUNTER-ARGUMENT BY NAMING PLATFORMERS BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT LISTING THE ONES THAT WERE TERRIBLE, AND YOU ALMOST CERTAINLY NEVER PLAYED.
Eg: Godzilla on the NES.

Bach would have been better if he added electric guitars to his music because electric guitars are popular and popular things are good therefore all good things must include electric guiatars and good graphics and 3D do you see what I am saying?

Why do you appear to be basing your arguments on the assumption that mine is 'Graphics made games good!' when this is quite clearly not the case?

I was talking about multiplayer, in which a new addition, no matter how minor, can tip the balance towards a game, if all the other areas are as good.
You appear to be talking about single player, in which case you're a fool because the warcraft 3 single player mode is the best out of any RTS ever made.

Replace Quakeworld with halflife, and maybe, just maybe, I'll concede that point to you. Quakeworld was mediocre at best.
But, in answer to your question. Why would you go for the buxom blonde with the big knockers, instead of her fat, ugly, spotty, whore of a friend?
Why do people drive a Porsche instead of a Corsa? Both will get you to the same place, and if you stick to speed limits, in about the same time.
Looks, looks mean everything.

seriously, I think the most inovative stuff wasn't developed on those consoles, I think they where on the ZXspectrum/C64, Amiga and other homecomputer systems.

heh
we are speaking about games here, if your main goal to drive a certain car just because of it looks I can imagine your point of view.
cars: looks and comfortability.
Games: playability, enjoyment.
We are discussing here the fact/opinion that graphics and effects are being prior to playability in general by the gaming industry.

My point is, that throughout society, we take a greater interest in things that look good, over things that look shit.
95% of games we see these days are older games, with a new graphics engine strapped on, Max Payne was probably, the last game I played and thought 'Oooh, this is innovative' - and the joy of bullet time lasted about, 30 seconds, and then it was just another 3rd person shooter.
Its the same with movies, (which, if you notice, up there, in the topic, was the original point of the thread) - We very rarely see anything innovative these days, its all been done before, but now its being done again, and it looks better, so hell yeah, we're going to buy it.
Looks, mean, everything.

Re: Why do people care about special effects in films so much
One of the best games I've played was Wings on the Amiga, with probably the worst graphics possible for a WW1 game. There was bright green ground, bright blue sky, red planes and yellow planes. And white bullets I guess. But goddamn was it addictive.

After reading this, I was going to put a witty 'I guess we all just play QuakeWorld then?'
But I see you've already done that. Predictable, aren't you?
As for your car analogy, it's shit. Why would I drive a Porsche over a Corsa?
Because if I'm doing the speed limit in a Corsa down a windy country road, I'd be on the verge of death, plus, I'd be uncomfortable after thirty minutes, I'd be cramped, the noise from the outside would disturb me and if something pulled out suddenly, I'd almost certainly die.
In a Porsche, or even my Prelude, it can quite comfortably handle the speeds without danger of sliding off the road, there's plenty of room, the seats are covered in leather and soft and lovely, the car is quiet, so I can listen to music without having the volume turned up to maximum, increasing concentration and when something unexpected happens, I know the brakes will save me or I can accelerate out of trouble.
Use a decent argument next time, faggot.

Re: Why do people care about special effects in films so much
People care about special effects in movies because most people don't really go to the cinema looking for an intellectual challenge, but rather to be entertained or diverted from the banalities of everyday life. Special effects further cement the notion that this is not reality in the sense of what most people normally experience from day to day. That and the fact that like all great art the pinnacle of achievement in this area will still take your breath away. Plus many movies don't use special effects that much anyways and are still pretty cool.

I like movies with CGI in them.
Apparently it's the 'cool' thing now to bash new games because they have better graphics. I mean seriously, people will play a great game and claim Pong was better because they 'focused on gameplay'. I don't get it.

I do apreciate some good graphics but loads of games gives me the feeling that the developers gave priority to graphics and tryed to put in gameplay a bit later.
