Re: IDS is OUTTA HERE!
So the crew have decided to get rid of the captain as he couldnt plug the hole in the sinking ship. Hah its funny how the tories, with flags waving and patriotic music blaring, said it was upto the grass roots of thier party to elect their leader! 'Democracy, yeah, we do that' etc, and 90 members of the old boys club have got rid of their choice. I wonder how many candidates they will put up for the dangerous masses to vote on this time. My money is 1. Kinda like the way communism worked.
Its only a matter of time till the tories become the third party of choice. Here is raising a glass to that day.

Re: IDS is OUTTA HERE!
They said it wasn't a 'humiliation' for him on the wireless, as if twenty more votes against him would have irrevocably tarnished his reputation for life.
I mean, he only survived for two years as leader, is only one of three modern conservative leaders never to become PM, and was ditched by ninenty of his parliamentary colleagues.
What exactly constitutes a 'humiliation', then?

worst is that michael howard seems to have no credible opposition so will be given the role without vote. It seems you can buy off rivals these days. Long live democracy and its oligarchs!

Re: IDS is OUTTA HERE!
the trouble is all teh big heavyweights apart from portillo have said they wont be running. David Davis was seen as howards main threat and he has already stated he wont be standing in return for "the dream ticket" teaming of him and howard.
The big thing is that since howard has already bought a large majority of heavyweights such as letwin and maude there supporters will vote for howard. Anyone who does stand are unlikely to be successful imho.

Re: IDS is OUTTA HERE!
Michael Howard hasn't announced yet, although it is expected (Read: He is going to) announce later today.
Nobody else will stand, Howard will gain the nomination by default, and I will be enriched to the tune of fifty British pounds.
If Howard lacks political judgement, then he will probably do what Hague and Don'tCan't Smith did, and revert to pointless Thatcherism, whilst exlucing anyone with talent, prestige, and weight with the left of the party from the shadow cabinet.
If he has any sense, then he'll bring Portillo, and Maude, perhaps, back into the shadow cabinet, whilst keeping the right heavies like Davis, etc, and tell the activists to go **** themselves. (Which is essentially what the MP's have implicitly done twice in the last twenty four hours, so I don't think it will be that big a step to take.) Clarke is probably too old and far too gone by this point.
In any case, concilliation is the only way forward when a party is in this state. The 'back me or sack me' rhetoric of Don'tCan't Smith was totally misjudged in this respect.

Re: IDS is OUTTA HERE!
Howard will be the next tory leader, I am just dissapointed in the tactics used by howard. Hardly the signs of a strong leader to "buy" the opposition.

You're assuming that he did, which atm, is totally uncoroborated. Anyone worth their political salt knew that Howard would easily be the favourite once IDS was gone, so the only calculus required amongst the senior members was 'Do we go for Unity under Howard, or do we try and see if we achieve the slim hope that we can scrape out something better', which is not a terribly difficult equation, all things considered.
Plus, they are displaying that they expect Howard to be as inclusive towards them as they have been to him. (Why did you think Dorrell, Letwin and Fox all made that statement together? Ideological solidarity, that's why.)

When you have dorrell call him "a man of enormous experience, a political heavyweight" you know he has teh support sewn up. Even if anyone does stand with people like Davis, letwin, maude supporting you know he will probably stand unopposed.
If his win was to be credible a credible opponent should have stood imo. Its a weak political move to "buy" your opponents.
Davis especially has a lot of support.

Re: IDS is OUTTA HERE!
Well, again, we have no proof that he did, other than rumours that he apparently had a meeting with David Davis. (Shock, horror!) As I said, it's totally plausible that they merely consulted together and worked out the best strategy. He may have given Davis a guarantee of some sort, but this is hardly surprising, considring that he would have had to have took Davis on anyway, considering his levels of support.
I personally don't find it in any way detracts from Howard's position. Surely the fact that nobody wants, or nobody is willing to stand merely increases his position?

Re: IDS is OUTTA HERE!
or shows that he has had to make a lot of promises to ensure it didn't go to a constituency vote which he was by no means guaranteed to win. I think its politically weak tbh.
Anyway business lunch now - will reply after my free lunch :-)

Again, no evidence for the first part, and as for the second, Davis wouldn't have got through the parliamentary stage, where he lacks support, and he was the only other senior figure of the right. Whoever won out as the right-winger in the parliametary stage would then have gone on to gain the membership vote by default.
Davis undoubtedly knew this.

I'm sure he will be conformted greatly by the knowledge that a board of RP geeks that are leeching off the goodwill of the managers of an online forum for an online game have chosen, in their wisdom to support him.
I imagine he will announce his candidacy tommorow.
