Roadtrip through California
So me and a few friends (belgians) are planning to do a roadtrip through california, but I'm wondering if anybody has any experience from it or lives in california to tell us what's worth seeing overthere
obviously we'll try to do las vegas, los angeles, death valley, grand canyon, route 1, yosemite park and that valley with all the pointy rocks (forgot the name :P) and the one where erosion caused skateboard-ramp-like rocks etc (forgot the name of that aswell)
but are there other things worth seeing overthere?
unfortunately we only have 2 weeks, which might also mean we can't do a few of these things since 4 cool places (las vegas/death valley/grand canyon, los angeles, san fransisco, yosemite park) to see are in the outer corners of california :/
but anyway, I'm wondering if anybody has anything they wanna advice us to go see

Re: Roadtrip through California
I dunno but just remember to put a CD on loop with that song by Phantom Planet to play throughout ALL the driving. NEVER turn it off. That'll improve your trip tenfold.

remember if u have drug or violent convictions you will get a roasting at customs these days about why you are entering the country.
I think belgians might fall into the terrorist sterotype but im not up to 2007 spec yet

The main advice i think you need is simply this: Las Vegas is in Nevada NOT California (you moron).
Also San Diego is much, MUCH nicer than Los Angeles so i'd go there instead. Furthermore I would advise you against spending too much time in San Fransisco 'cause it's the gay capital of the USA but i'm guessing that you already knew that and that was probably the primary reason behind your decision to go to California (you gay).

i like how you try to be a flamer, but yet you fail miserably
anyway, i realise las vegas is in nevada, the other thing i'd like to see but couldn't find the name of isn't in california either, but it's close to it..
I wish you could join us just to say where we are and where all the other things are tho!

Re: Roadtrip through California
I travelled around california a good bit two years ago. The San Diego Wildlife Park or whatever it's called is definitely one of the the things worth seeing on your trip. L.A. is a bit shit, urban sprawl is such a great tourist attraction, but if you can make it up to the mountains surrounding it they're rather nice (I can't really remember if you can do much fishing or things like that up there but it's probably worth looking into if you like that sort of thing). Oh and try and go whale-watching if you're there in the right season!

Re: Roadtrip through California
We're going to visit either Sixflags or those movie studios thingies in LA. I heard it's pretty shit apart from that.
Anyways, this is the trip we booked: http://www.structweb.net/img/routemap.jpg
We are going to start in Denver the 30th of April.
Moab might be nice for you too as there's a lot of whitewater rafting going on there.

Re: Roadtrip through California
Calaveras Big Trees State Park is very nice. Some of the largest and oldest trees in the world are located in this park. This is located about 3-3.5 hours east of San Francisco. If you are interested, I will give you better directions.
This would cause you to pass through Stockton, where I work and live. If you wanted to stop in Stockton on the way there or back, I would buy you a meal.
Hearst Castle on Hwy. 1 on your way between San Francisco and Los Angeles is very interesting.
Lake Tahoe isn't as flashy as Las Vegas but it has casinos and the setting is beautiful.
Napa Valley if you like to go wine tasting (and are 21).
Lodi for wine tasting as well.
Santa Cruz for the beach.
Muir Woods in Marin County.

Re: Roadtrip through California
Also go to a Lion King, Les Miserables or Miss Saigon show in Vegas. Make sure you spend at least 20 hours playing Holdem'. Don't spend too much time on Black Jack, you'll be broke quick.
If you're in Los Angeles, go to Hollywood and Highland. Check out the clubs on Hollywood Blvd and on the Sunset strip. Visit the Getty Center, pretty decent museum, although probably shitty compared to museums in Europe. And don't forget to visit Universal Studios and Magic Mountain 6 Flags.
If you're in Compton or South Central, buy a pack of cigarettes from a liquor store and yell out "what's hanging?!, you black motherf*ckers!!". Or be articulate and use the N word.
If in San Diego, visit the San Diego Zoo like JBG said and party in downtown SD at the gas lamp.
You'll get laid more in SD than in LA. Fact.

Re: Roadtrip through California
thanks for the answers (almost) all.. here's a route we kinda put together that should come close to the route we're planning to do (it's just a draft atm)
http://members.lycos.co.uk/elcura/mi...%eb%20reis.jpg
any people with experience see things on the way that are worth seeing that aren't mentioned?
also, do you think it's possible to do this in 16 days?
for "you're gay" we realise utah and nevada aren't california.. we decided to expand the trip a bit more east
also note we're not planning to stay in los angeles/las vegas/san francisco very long.. keep that in mind when telling if it's possible to do this trip in 16 days
dda: do we pass through calaveras big trees park on our map? cause I didn't see it on the road map or anything.. oh and maybe I'll take you up on that meal.. if our fund is running out when we get there :P

Re: Roadtrip through California
Calaveras Big Trees is not too far from Yosemite, however, depending on where you plan to stay and such it might be enough out of your way to make the trip impractical.
Let me take a look at the road atlas and then I will give you an opinion on the 16 day thing and how practical it looks.
Where are you flying into? LAX or SFO?
Also, are you planing on doing any camping along the way or only staying in motel/hotels?

Re: Roadtrip through California
I'm one of cura's friends going with him. We're flying in and out of LAX. Depending on how practical it is we'll probably only use hotels/motels. We're not afraid of camping tho.
We heard we need to book most of our stays in advance tho, for example if we want to stay in one of the national parks, if we don't it's immediately 100 miles away from any parks. Is this true? (both the booking in advance and the distance from the NPs if we don't book)
cause that kinda sucks, we don't want to be dependant on a strict schedule too much :/

Re: Roadtrip through California
Ok, i went to CA with my girlfriend last year. Stayed in Sacremento (Capital of CA), smaller than San Francisco afaik, but still a really cool place to chill etc. SanFrancisco is also really cool, hard rock cafe there is amazing! although quite expensive! Erm, then after staying in Sacremento for 1 week we moved to a small outdoor camp by Lake Tahoe, IT WAS AMAZING! Trekking, mountain biking, jumping off cliffs into the clear lake, bbq's, canoeing, absailing, and paragliding, the best vacation ive ever been on, watch out for bears though!
Sorry dont really know what else to write

I hope we'll gave some time for the stuff .Disc. did aswell, altho it'll be a different kind of trip.
here's another map of possible routes we might take, might be easier to see how possible it is and how far from calaveras we actually go:

Are you hitchiking? If you are, as i suspect you will be, how long it takes in your case will probably depend on how short your Daisy-Duke-cut-off-jean-shorts are.

All the valleys in Utah are cool, but unless you're big into red rock formations, they can get a little samey. I recall Zion being better than Monument valley, mostly because Monument valley is huge and you have to drive between arches (plus you've probably seen it a thousand times in movies already).
If you're stopping by Santa Barbara, you might want to stop by Isla Vista. Great beaches and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Not that the two are normally lacking in California.
Also, death valley in the summertime is a bit hot. No, seriously. It is.
Edit: And JBG does not lie, LA is shit.
