Therefore. suggestions on how to combat such an ailment would be appreciated

The best cure by far is to read. When I was younger i suffered from extreme insomnia for a year and a half. I quite literally was lucky if i got an hours sleep a week. I have therefore got a little experience in this and have found that reading helps a hell of a lot. Read until you feel tired then read some more. Read until you are physically having to keep your eyes open. You will have a great sleep (just make sure that you don't forget to turn off your alarm clock else it will all have been in vein!).

Reading IRC and reading a book are 2 different things, set yourself a time to get off the computer (make sure u stick to it), grab a book and lie down in bed reading it. ofc this doesn't always work as i've once spent the whole night lying in bed reading a whole book.

the best sleep ive ever had is often under very odd circumstances
Ive fallen asleep upside down on a chair on numerous occasions and i've managed to sleep in the corner of a friends bedroom with nothing but a denim jacket and a pillow
I once caught a few minutes snooze leaning on an open car window, and most notably of all, i once woke up on the floor of my friends bathroom... lets just say the night before i had poor aim, and its much worse than you think. The smell was apparently vomit-enducing
Despite allllll of that, im tired all the bloody time! but i advise you to hang out with ur m8's, again, read, walk around or something, and sleep upside down in armchairs. I think of dreams like films, just let ur imagination wonder... and drift into sleeeep. . . . . .

5 Sure fire ways to get sleep:
Drink lots of alchohol
Obtain a swift blow to the head
Attending a lecture by Dr Hood (electronics prof from my uni)
Delete you're PA account
Annoy the mafia (you'll end up sleeping with the fishes for those of you unable to make the mental leap)
I could go on, but I'll let others join in

If your male, just lie in bed and go masturbate.
After completing your task, just put lie your head down and close your eyes. Your brain releases a chemical that makes you feel extremely tired. Its flawless.

Dont sit on your computer. That only makes it worse, at least it does/did for me.
Drink a few beers, smoke a little strong hash, read. There are lost of options, it's more of a mental condition then anything.
Insomnia is under-rated. It's fun to be up for long periods, sometimes at least. I get really productive, so i do lost of stuff!
Oh, and the best way to sleep is if you do some really heavy jobs. Like, stay up all day painting a house or something. I always fall asleep, and sleep heavenly, if i've done some hard working in the day.

If you actually have insomnia you need to see a doctor as it can severely impair both your judgement and motor (that's moving to you and me kids) ability. If it's just difficult to sleep go out and run or take part in some other form of physical activity. If you have an inconsistent timetable (ie you get up and go to bed and very different times only a few days apart) then you should change that as well.
