the power of the sun at our finger tips
Bet your thinking "oh god not another one of these wacko people telling me about new sources of power" but this is something that can solve our energy requirments without polluting the atmosphere. I am talking about neuclear Fusion. Even oil companies are trying to swing attention away from nuclear Fusion.
just take a few moments to read a basic summary to nuclear fusion telling you whats it all about
http://www.pppl.gov/fusion_basics/pa...on_basics.html

Re: the power of the sun at our finger tips
True, but now it can be done. there was a debate about where to build the 1st fusion reactor
(france or japan)

Re: the power of the sun at our finger tips
well, it could be done before but the net energy produced was always less then what was used to make it.
( google for JET and fusion )
the one they`re planning to build in france or japan SHOULD hopefully break even, or actually produce energy
Edit : history of the place

And if the International partnership chooses Japan, the EU have said they're going to build one at the French site anyway. :)

Re: the power of the sun at our finger tips
The french just love nuclear power.
PS. When did it become successful/worthwhile? I've not seen a link on GD about it, which surprises me.

Re: the power of the sun at our finger tips
well what it needs is publicity. Hopefully more countries (mainly the US) will take an interest in it and if the results from the France/japan reactor is good hopefully more will be built

It hasn't yet. This is just the next step towards producing a commercially viable reactor.

Edit your sig down to 10 lines within the next 30 minutes or you'll end up with a summary that reads
"Rnds 4 thru 13: noob/4D/SWaRM/NewDawn (Various)"

Re: the power of the sun at our finger tips
funny.
just read two profession booklets about the (sustainable) energymarket. one had a rather interesting article about nuclear energy.
newest facts:
- china has 8 reactors atm. they announced to multiply that amount by a factor 5.
- the USA gave 26 reactors new licenses and is still working on the licenses for 42 others. (allowing the reactors to be working for another 60 years instead of 40)
- the french company AREVA will build 30 to 50 new units untill 2020.
- finland started the construction of a new 1700 MW reactor, and investigating the construction of another one.
- poland announced to build a big new reactor that should be finished in 2021.
- belgium will reconsider their decission to close all their reactors now their government has changed.
- italy, the country where they closed all reactors after a referendum in 1987, announced that the building of new reactors will be reconsidered, because of cost-efficiency. (the electricity-prize there is 20 to 30% higher than in the rest of europe).
nuclear energy is on it's way back, without a doubt. i still put my money on sustainable energy though, for the simple reason that you can not sell it to the world to allow one country a certain source of energy, while refusing other countries to have the same possibilities.

Learn how to spell "nuclear" before getting involved in any sort of scientific discussion.

You didn't go off topic, you thought that it was on topic and you ballsed up, as proven by me quoting you referring to it as "fusion" before you edited it.

Nope, you just paid attention to the news when it happened rather than jumping on the bandwaggon two years later.
