Moving for a Job
How many of you have moved to a completely new area for a job?
And isn't it really strange, going to a new city/town and not knowing anyone?
Looking at jobs, my only real options are Surrey or Jersey. Both are pretty expensive, so I've started to consider just moving somewhere completely new and trying my hand at making friends clean off.
But how do you do it? I mean, if there's noone at your work that you get on with (sod's law my school would be full of old fuddy duddies) then how do you go out and socialise, and meet new people?
It's all so alien to me

Re: Moving for a Job
I haven't had to though I did apply to internship programs that would have involved me moving away. I imagine it would be quite weird though it isn't something that bothers me particularly.

Re: Moving for a Job
I'm moving down to Oxford in the summer for an industrial placement and know nobody in the area so i'll be in a similar situation. Fortunately though some of the people in my group at work arent much older than myself and seem quite friendly.
I'ld probably go with what NB3 suggested and get involved in some kind of team. Personally i'ld try to find a 5-a-side football group or a pub pool team etc.

Re: Moving for a Job
I don't play any sports and don't have many hobbies
I wonder if there's an internet team where I'll be moving!

Re: Moving for a Job
Sit in a pub and drink, and then after a short while, I bet people chat to you.
Although not too much of an old man pub, and not too much of a bar.

Re: Moving for a Job
It's not that hard to make friends if you're determined.
But I would never move for a job I don't think.

Re: Moving for a Job
When i moved for Uni i didn't know anyone, although it's not exactly difficult to socialise in a university environment.
I don't think it would be too different though were you moving for the sake of a job. Just get to know people who have similar interests to you, talk about things non-job related and go down lots of pubs.
I met half my mates from Uni down my local.

All you need to know is that to a southern fairy it would be nothing nice.

Re: Moving for a Job
I`ve moved many a time over the years for work reasons. I`ve even taken up rock climbing in the past just to get to know a new landlord. The pub one works well, but can take a little time.

Re: Moving for a Job
I looked in Scotland, out of interest (I looked pretty much everywhere). There aren't any ICT teacher jobs going in Glasgow, sorry Rankin :P
I looked in Wales too, as every Welsh girl I've met has been fit, and I think I quite like the accent too (WHAT?! That's a reason to move! It's as good a reason as any of the others I have for moving elsewhere).
I have an applicaton form for a place in Guildford that looks very nice (in a rough area, but I'd only be there for a year anyway minimum - if I like it I can stay on). I've also applied for a place in a school Solihull. I had to use streetmap.co.uk to find out where the place was. That also looks nice.
I know a few people in Surrey, but the living cost is apparently high there
Not sure about the living cost around the outskirts of Birmingham (which is where Solihull is).
If I move to Guildford I can hang out with Hicks though

Re: Moving for a Job
Solihull is meant to be the "nice" part of the west midlands. I know a very very very fit girl who is from there.

I plan on leaving the narrow boat at home, and taking the train there, so hopefully they'll leave me be.
