Re: [BBC News Link] Hahahahahahahaha
I dont think he will.
Hes stretched American resolve in Iraq to breaking point. Invading Iran and facing an even bloodier conflict with even more American boys dying is not what he wants.
Unless it means an increase in the stock of Haliburton

How in the living **** can a statement made within the last 24 hours and not repeated on this board be "Old".
The Iran issue is "Old" in that its been discussed constantly, but Bush, after his Secretary of Defence yesterday stated her total support for referring the matter to the UN Security Council for the purpose of sanctions and "possibly more" to then announce he wanted a negotiated settlement, bearing in mind hes spent more money on the military than ANY US president ever, is nothing short of mind-****ing-boggling.

Re: [BBC News Link] Hahahahahahahaha
There's no way that America can go into Iran with any sort of support from the US public, other than support generated from some hideous terrorist attack that can be pinned on Iran.
Again, Iran would be more of a graveyard than Iraq ever could be for US troops. Bush will have to negotiate. It's the only option open to him and his allies at the moment.
If that fails, it's UN sanctions for a couple of years. Which no doubt will happen.
From there..it all depends on the political situation of America and EU countries in a few years time...

Iraqs in turmoil
Afghanistan still regularly provides a supply of US Bodybags
Russia is flexing its muscle on gas
China is gobblng up fuel supplies.
How do you impose sanctions on Iran when its main export it Oil, and sanctions wont be backed due to the self interest the bigger countries in having a continued supply of oil?
Iran chose its moment well, sanctions, if they come at all, are years away.

Re: [BBC News Link] Hahahahahahahaha
Mr Bush said he was "not going to prejudge what the United Nations Security Council should do".
Thank god for that, otherwise we'd have an illegal war or whatnot :S

Re: [BBC News Link] Hahahahahahahaha
There is no way China is ever going to back any action whatsoever against Iran in the security council. They want resources and dont give a **** about anything else.
Russia is not likely to support them either. They want to continue to sell weapons and stuff to Iran. They just sold a few air-defense systems to them (at some time in the last few month, I remember reading about that somewhere)
The french probably will be against any action, because of the oil. Blair will probably back Bush on whatever he wants.
Basicly the same situation as in Iraq, except that a) the public in the US probably doesnt like he idea of yet another war very much and b) the US army is already somewhat stretched out by occupying two countries. Whatever progress was made in these countires in the last years (if any) would be destroyed by attacking Iran now.
The only thing that could happen would be some air strikes against nuclear facilities in Iran, without any backing by the security council, but I dont see that happening, just now after things more or less returned to normal after this whole Iraq-fiasco. Maybe they let Israel do it.

Re: [BBC News Link] Hahahahahahahaha
Russia wants Iran to stop enriching uranium. They'd prefer the Iranians accept their proposal to sell them enriched uranium ($$$), but if the Iranians continue to refuse then I think they will support some action by the UNSC.
China isn't keen on sanctions but may support some action, especially if their oil purchases from Iran are exempted (or are replaced by oil from elsewhere--Iraq?).
France and the UK have no choice but to support a Security Council resolution. For two years the EU3 (France, UK and Germany) have held up referral to the Security Council as the stick during their negotiations with Iran. If they were to turn around and undermine the Security Council now then that would eliminate whatever's left of their credibility.
For the time being, everyone* is agreed that it should be escalated to the IAEA as the next step to going to the Security Council, so we shall see.
*The five permanent members of the Security Council + Germany.
