Claiming travel expenses
I need VAT receipts for my travel to and from 'a location' next week so I can claim the expenses but 'apparently' since rail travel is VAT free they won't give me any. Anyone had to claim expenses before for a train journey and if so where did you get the receipts from? thetrainline.com's customer service line is being a bit shit in that they've said it 'can't be done' =(

Are you sure it's not just the VAT-number (or whatever its called) thats on "normal" receipts you need?
Where I used to work had shitty tills that couldn't print readable receipts, so I always had to write this number on a scrap of paper for the businessmen who wanted to claim back for their £1.50 sandwiches :|

The letter I have says that I specifically need VAT receipts as opposed to 'just normal ones', though I might give them a bell and make sure.

I do accounts for someone and she always has receipts - they're like the normal tickets but black around the edge, you just have to ask for one when you pick it up.
Having said that I 've just handed in tickets before to get expenses but if you do have vat receipt they can claim it back, hence they want it!

thetrainline has those cover-slips for the tickets in that envelope they send, im sure those can be used as proof of purchase

i get a reciept for my tickets when i buy them
it has the VAT registration number on it
that is what you need (not the amount of VAT charged but the company you are buying froms VAT number)

Last time I claimed for a train journey (London to Lake Windermere), I gave them an Amex statement that showed, very clearly, 'Virgin Trains, Date xx.xx.xxxx'

All these people who claim VAT receipts are a must are talking bollocks. If you show that travel was made using a particular company, they can claim the VAT back against travel and let the VAT man worry about the who and why and when and how much.

When I claimed expenses for a train journey i just gave them the recipt (printed on a piece of card the same as the ticket). This was enough for them...
