anyhoo. i much prefer that microsoft give me the choice of running something that's 'insecure' should i so want. rather than opera, which clearly knows what's best for me. it's not like i'm well aware it's insecure, but have it running because i need it. on the happy bunny side, maybe i should give firefox a go. i'd imagine they've got a plugin for it
anyway, i have script blocked at my firewall, plus only allow the execution of local scripts. this would seem to cut down the amount of tinkering with my cd drive... (although, is fking annoying when some idiot writes a site relying on popups :/)

Not as far as I know. I'd wager than Sun's Java VM is more secure than Microsoft's, for as far as that still exists.

That's not the case.
The case is that Microsoft instead of using a well-documented and public standard, again decides to create their own proprietary version of it, which introduces some trivial functionality and a large assortment of security problems. And Opera and Mozilla choosing to use the standard JavaScript instead of the Microsoft custom VBScript. Which is a good initiative, because if people don't have VBScript support, it will die out. Which is what it should do.
I can't find a quick VBScript plugin for Mozilla. There is an ActiveX plugin which should support both Mozilla/Firefox as well as Opera, although why one would want to install it is beyond me.

You don't want your pages to load in faster, even if that is the only benefit? It's not as if Firefox has an interface vastly different from MSIE's, and there's MSIE-lookalike setups available for Opera as well.

Re: [Leshy] I Don't Use Opera Because...
I Don't use Opera because 1) I can't be bothered to d/l another browser when IE is ready and waiting for me.
2) I use all of 4/5 web sites on the internet which work fine on IE.
3) Until i read this thread i didn't even know what Opera/Firefox were.

Worst argument ever.
Anyway, Leshy has always said that Firefox is a great browser. He just prefers Opera (as do I).
For the record, I think it makes sense to use IE if you only use the web maybe 20-30 minutes a week, or purely only look at one or two sites at most. Similarly, notepad makes sense if you only want to make quick notes or a couple of lines of HTML. For heavier users (of either product) it makes sense to look at alternatives.
Finally, I think it's great that there's people out there who are using IE because they think it will somehow spite other people. Keep up the good work lads.

Re: [Leshy] I Don't Use Opera Because...
It gives me a completely blank screen.
This made me giggle though:
Code:
'if instr( window.navigator.appVersion,"MSIE 6.0")>0 then
BROWSERRECENT=TRUE

You don't click on random links?
I use IE on the computers at university because it's the Microsoft Windows default. Then I'm not browsing for recreation so there's no nasty links to worry about. If the computer did start flashing bright colours I could get someone to sort it out for free. I don't like tabs except for for porn, I don't care about gestures, skins, etc. On my laptop I use Epiphany because it's in Debian and I don't see any reason to switch.

of course i don't click random links... that would be rather dumb in IE!
flavious: 'cus when you posted your car thingy, i wondered how secure the computer you'd be posting it from was. running opera on windows, for example, seems rather a waste of time, when there's so many other things that can 'get you' and which don't require you to visit dumb sites.

Get it from http://www.sun.com.

As Opera. If a site blocks your browser with one of those "Please upgrade to MSIE 5.0 or newer!" messages, try setting it to MSIE 6.0 and reloading.
These occurrences are very rare though, so in the meantime you should make webmasters aware that their public uses Opera

It really annoys me when people use arguments like this- surely it's obvious to an idiot that doing *something* to minimize the chances of problems is better than doing **** all?

Re: [Leshy] I Don't Use Opera Because...
i must confess, i don't really see the point of protecting myself against things that i have to have a hand in getting, while running an OS which frequently catches things all on its own. ergo, it would seem more sensible to run IE on linux than it would to run opera on windows (although, i doubt it's possible). at least that way, the stuff i want to work would work.
ironically, the only virus i've ever had came from a brother running a .exe on my machine 'because he thought it'd broken his and wanted to make sure it'd been that one'. *sigh*

Completely ignoring the non-security related reasons for not using IE...

So how do you get rid of these adverts without either paying for Opera or using a crack ?

drop them at firewall? i'd imagine they come from a fairly limited number of hosts...
alternativly, i'd imagine some fiddling with the local hosts file would do it

I'm a heavy user as far as browsing is concerned, yet I have found no advantage to gain from using either Opera or Firefox. Infact one of my annoyances with both are that features that normally enchance my productivity are seriously flawed in both packages (buggy mouse scrolling being a minor but inconvenient example).
This is not to say that for some people they are not more suited for their usage, or that they are totally bad programs, just that for the rest of us IE is perfect and we would not have it any other way.
Your example of notepad is a poor one, I would trust a HTML editor as far as I could throw my car (not far). Of every one out there Dreamweaver is the only one to produce respectable code, yet even then it still requires a little touching up. I exclusively hand code all my pages in plain old notepad, it may at times take a little longer but the results are worth it.
I'm by not means a Microsoft zealot either, personally I treat their Office suite like a hellspawn and have proudly kept it off my system for 10 years.

Hmm my banking website ( www.nwolb.com) still doesn't like it even when I have it set as identify as IE.
It gayly says:
Internet Explorer Version 4 and up
Netscape Navigator 4 and up
Mozilla 1.5 and up

I am going to presume you mean the Progress Bar, which is the only one which autohides by default, as far as I know, and there's pretty much no reason to want it in view all the time as it offers no information that is useful once the page has loaded.
If you're looking for the stuff that MSIE and Firefox have in their status bar, simply add a status field to any of the toolbars you prefer. Activating the status bar, setting it to display at the bottom and putting a status field in it recreates the typical status bar as found in other browsers. You can do all this by right-clicking any of the toolbars and selecting "Customize Toolbars..."; the popup window should be self-explanatory.
