I don't think the dole is the problem. As Tomkat mentioned earlier, the dole is called Jobseekers Allowance (JSA as all the cool kids call it). The problem is that when you go in the whole system is a wreck. It's slow, tedious, boring and quite frankly I was more likely to find a job going ip dip battleship in the local paper.

They job centre didn't provide any decent advice that one would expect from a group whose sole aim is to find you a job, they didn't give me or others interview advice, application advice, CV advice. It was just basic turn up, sit down.

I also believe that the system is open to exploitation. The checks and balances are minimal. I know people and have dealt with people who work, are in education and amongst other things claiming other benefits. To put it quite frank they know how to work the system. I am not condoning it, however when I ask them about the situation they laugh at the mention of the Job Centre coming after you.

The system needs a shake up.

Incidentally!

I finish my radiotherapy in 1.5 weeks - 23rd January.

I was told by the nice government people that my Income Support (I can't work during this time, as I am in hospital every day for 1-2 hours) would finish on 24th December, as that's the date given on my last doctor's note.

I rang the clinical nurse who is kind of responsible for the coordination of my treatment.

Tom: "Hey, Happy New Year. I got a letter from the government saying my Income Support ended on Christmas Eve, but my radiotherapy goes on through until 23rd January. Could I get another doctor's note please?"
Nurse: "Ahhh hey Tom. How was your Christmas?"
Tom: "Good thanks, I was in Jersey. You?"
Nurse: "It was grand. So when shall I fill this form in until? How many weeks do you want? Eight?"
Tom: "Errr, eight sounds good"
Nurse: "I'll do ten to be on the safe side"
Tom: "Ok, cool, thanks"

So I'm getting income support until April sometime (it's about £90 every 2 weeks).

That's how easy it is to wangle money out of the government. To be a DIRTY SCAMMER. I didn't even mean to do it :crymeariver:




PS in reality i'll have to go through more inane bureaucracy as i plan to work asap after radiotherapy so i'm going to have to cancel this income support.

Pig we get alot of that in London/Bristol and yeah ive been in very similar situations. The people are what can only be described as ****s who will probably be serving you your Burger King next week. Just a bunch of wankers.

I am only 16 so would be considered part of this "youth" that is such a problem.
Now i beleive the roots of the problem of anti social behaviour is in disapline. The lack of disapline in schools, at home and in the streets mean that the youth can get away with a lot more than they could say, 10 years ago. The introduction of the laws agaisnt *slapping* your child when he/she does something wrong has just worsened the problem.
Im in College at the moment but in my last year of high school i knew several people who regularly brought in weapons such as knives and iron bars, these people were never searched even though the teachers were told several times about it. Now im not 100% on the laws about searching a pupils bag etc, but i thought teachers could do it. Why they didnt has always mystified me.
In Manchester being mugged or just beat up for "fun" isnt that rare an event. I was once going over a moterway bridge and two kids no older than 12 tryed to pull me off my bike, right infront of a camera which is blatently there. Now i dont know if they were stupid, or just didnt care but to try and mug someone infront of a camera surely shows a lack of respect for authority.

I beleive that the children of today will turn into the criminals of tomorrow. The majority of kids are decent and wouldnt dare try and rob someone but around where i live its just stupid at how just dont care for authority.
If a effective type of punishment that these kids would respect was to be brought in then i think that we could whip a bit of respect for authority into them. These kids only seem to respect each other for deeds of violence and illegal activitys, so it seems to me that good rap across the knuckles or cane to the thighs wouldnt harm anyone, i would have gladly taken the consequences of any wrong doings i did at school, happy in the knowledge that the ****s that went to my school were probably hurting more than me.
Bringing an effective type of punishment into schools could hardly make them worse, but there will always be someone who abuses it though so i suppose most wouldnt support it.

edit - my slight suffering in high school would be worth it for a better behaved youth.
