Its done by numbers.
The combat engine works like this:
Total damage = (# of attacking ship * damage)
Total damage = 253 * 45 = 11385
thus, 1000/2500 (0.4) of the Total damage will land on Beetles, Vipers (as they are the same proportion), and 500/2500 will land on Mossies.
0.4 * 11385 = 4554 Damage
0.2 * 11385 = 2277 Damage
Then you divide the total damage by the Armour of the Defending ship and round
down to the nearest whole unit. ie:
Beetle Armour = 21
Viper Armour = 27
Mossie = 26
4554 / 21 = 216 destroyed Beetles
4554 / 27 = 168 destroyed Vipers
2277 / 26 = 87 destroyed Mossies.
