Hi American people.
When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity.
To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300° C.
The Russians used a pencil.
Enjoy paying your taxes.

Re: Hi American people.
Actually you're all wrong.
NewScientist (my version of the bible) told me last week that Cosmonauts just use ordinary BiCS and always have.
Thank you for your time.

I tried writing with a stealth bomber once. It didn't go too bad, but the thing wouldn't fit into my pocket.

Did they remember the pencil sharpeners?
Those sharpenings must be quite dangerous in space...

They may be "nice" for work but they also tell people that you are a homosexual.

Re: Hi American people.
This is a myth. A private company developed the pen, NASA just adopted its use.
Pencils were not used because of the potential hazard of the broken graphite.
