Yeah, look at Millwall. In the FA Cup final ( ) but they haven't yet faced any premiership opposition; before us, their biggest scalp was Walsall.
However, especially in the Champions League, to reach the latter stages so often and yet not ever progress beyond the quarter finals implies some failing.
Oh, and the team that finishes top is only something like 70% likely to have been the 'best' team (although that's with a simplistic model)

Re: Chelsea Win? Monaco Win?
I think this is idiocy. I judge teams on current form, current achievements. I dont see how longetivity effects the fact that Monaco are in the semis and arsenal are not. Both had to face relatively equally skilled opponents in Chelsea and Real Madrid. Arsenal are out, Monaco are through. Yes i would fancy Arsenal to beat Monaco. Yes id fancy Real to take Monaco in a rematch. But, Monaco are in the last 4 of the major tournament, and anything you say cant stop that. Real or Arsenal might be more prestigious clubs, but Prestige dont mean a ****ing thing if your sitting in the sidelines. You can only beat who is put in front of you. What do you want them to do, say "look uefa, we feel a bit bad for beating lokomotiv moskow instead of a recognised good team, how about we play someone like man utd and the winner takes the semi final spot?"
I dont either know where this longevity thing comes into it. What do Monaco have to do, in your eyes, be one of the top 4, 8, 16 sides in the world?

Beat Arsenal 4-0 with not a single one of the goals being down to a mistake from Lehman, Lauren, or any controversial referring decisions by the ref.

Continued success over several seasons in top competitions. Leeds United got to the Semis of the Champions League remember, and Real Sociedad threatened for the Spanish title last season. Where are they now?

Last season Real Soceidad were one of the best teams in spain, a few seasons ago Leeds united were one of the best 4 teams in europe.

Re: Chelsea Win? Monaco Win?
the frontier between "being better" and "having luck" is very close, probably there is none.
if you have success over several reasons, you are classified as a top team. however, you have to proof every single season to really be one. monaco and chelsea did this better this season, than real and chelsea, thats why they belong to the tiop 4 in europe.

hey this throws the door right open for the winners. deportivo, monaco, porto or chelsea. i think the chances of chelsea bringing home the european cup have just had a boost. Deportivo Vs Chelsea in the final methinks! maybe deportivo will win that though, go on boiz!

So Depor just beat the best team in the world (technically) 4-0. The holders, AC milan are unthinkably out after holding a 4-1 lead.
Are depor then, one of the best 4 sides in the world, if not the best?
And anyway, why did you say arsenal, what have arsenal ever achieved?

I was being sarcastic Deffeh. You will never persuade Rids* that Arsenal arent one of the best teams in the world, much like you'll never persuade me that Shearer isnt the best striker to have played in the Premiership or Duff the bargain of the season <3.
Imo Arsenal have achieved nothing. They've gone 4 billion games unbeaten but as yet have won nothing, so as far as i'm concerned they are below Boro at the moment in terms of what they've achieved this season.
*or whoever it was you were arguiing with, i cant be arsed going back to page 1.

Porto can only win by diving/cheating or having a shitty official reffing/lining the match
IMO i dont rate them as a team, they are pretty mediocre in my eyes..
Chelsea v Deportivo in final i reckon..

Re: Chelsea Win? Monaco Win?
Did the IQ in here drop while I was away or are most of you doing the best impression of acting like ****ing retards the internet has ever seen?
I have never, claimed that Arsenal are one of the best teams in the world. I think we had an excellent run, and we have some of the best players in the world, but we're far from being the finished product that Milan are.
All I have argued is, that we beat ourselves. I've made no claims that we're better than xxx in this thread.
On a side note, Deportivo have been very impressive in the games that I've seen them this season (Not many, I admit) - The first game against Milan they were awesome for around the first 30 minutes, and the 2nd game against Milan, well.... Does progressing through to the semi final of Europes major competition make them one of the best teams in the world? Not in my opinion, but they've still been impressive.

i dont give a flying fcuk about all your long words and fancy indicators, blah blah blah...
Monaco, Depor, Chelsea and Porto are not the four best teams in europe, neither are the 4 fa cup semi finalists, or the 4 world cup semi finalists, and any1 that says otherwise is talking tosh and i couldnt care less what reasons they use or how long the replies are.

Re: Chelsea Win? Monaco Win?
So who in your opinion are the top 4, and top 8 sides in the world, and why?
Competitions were made to find who is the best. Last year AC milan were the best team in the world, the year before it was Real Madrid. Are you going to shun any of the remaining teams in the competition if they win it because they arent the bourgousie of football? Seems retarded to me to say to every little team at the start of the tournament, "ok, your in the first qualifying round, but say by some miracle you get through, qualify from the groups, get to the final and win - you wont be the best team in the world. Sorry, but Rids would like to change your name to Real Smallville or AC Smallville before thats possible."

Do give up Deffeh..... Chance does not dictate best, It just stops the world being more predictable, We are talking about the best sides going on predictability. Predictably the champions league format has become a farce after changing into a kind of mickey mouse any team with money can play cup instead of the best teams.
I think that surmises this best.

Re: Chelsea Win? Monaco Win?
This year's CL is the strangest. The big favourites are all knocked out (Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus, Man U, Arsenal, even Bayern Munich [considering they are a big club capable of winning it]).
I'm sensing Porto to win it. Purely because they're undefeated in their domestic league. The only other team, apart from Arsenal, who has a fantastic record in their league is AC Milan with one defeat and still are sitting on top of their table.
But if Monaco and Depor gets to the final, I'm putting a bet for 8-3 win for Monaco. Who said lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place?

I think it would have to be depor now, Naybet is a top class centre back and with Mauro Silva retiring i think its a kind of mission for them now. I bet tho that any of the 4 that could win it this season won't win it again in the next 5 yrs

You don't think chelsea have a shot at winning it again in the next five years? Good god man they can afford to go out and buy the other three semi-finalists this summer.

If Chelsea win the champs league, they will not only have the money but they will have the rep to have any player they want, which is prob the most frightening prospect.

Re: Chelsea Win? Monaco Win?
I think we've established that deffeh has been digging a whole since his ludacrous claim about who are the best teams in europe.
Aren't Corinthians the best team in the world by that merit? hahahahahahahaha....

They haven't faced any premiership opposition yet. Before they beat us (we missed whitley ) the biggest team they had faced was Walsall. Beating Tranmere Rovers in a replay isn't really that impressive, and whilst you can only beat the teams you face, Millwall haven't looked impressive.

Yeah, they must be bad because they got knocked out by the favourites.

If they continue to score points at the same rate, Chelsea will have more points than the premiership champions have had in (if memory serves) 5 out of the last 6 years. I'd hardly say that's not a fantastic record.

It doesn't matter who you play, it's how far you get!
