World Jump Day
www.worldjumpday.org
The work of crazy scientists.
Do you think this will work?
I personally doubt it, as the act of synchronization is far too difficult in my eyes. You'd need some sort of "signal" and a rythm, to coordinate all of this. Well, we'll see...

Re: World Jump Day
basically the forces involved in jumping, falling back down and hitting the ground cancel out...

Re: World Jump Day
According to the times, it seems that people on the other side of the world have to jump at the same time as us?
So surely (my physics is a little shaky), if the entire world is shook in that kind of way (assuming it works) then on average it'd just wobble a bit then return to normal?

Re: World Jump Day
from the image it's the impact of the jump that they think will knock the planet out of it's orbit.
i doubt they'll find enough people to do it. and i doubt that if they did it'd be enough force.

Re: World Jump Day
No no, only people on the northern hemisphere are supposed to jump, as far as I understod it.
Also, imagine jumping from a ship hovering in space. You WOULD force it in a direction away from your jumping. And even more when landing on it again (given its gravity "pulls" you back).

ok then.. even if we could change teh orbit... why would we want to?
what purpose would it serve us?

Re: World Jump Day
6 billion * 80 kg average is 480 billion kg = 4.8*10^11 kg
The mass of the planet is 5.9742 × 10^24 kg.
This is nearly a factor 10^13.
Assuming that every person can jump up a metre he will leave the ground and land on it again with a speed of 4.2m/s.
So the change in speed of the planet will be about 2 * 4.2 / 10^13 m/s. Rounding errors here and there and lots of assumptions.
You will need to jump an awfull lot for that to be noticable.

Re: World Jump Day
about 0.00000000000042 m/s or 0.00000000000000151 km/hr or 0.00000000000000094 mph
Considering that the earths rotational speed is 1700km/hr already, and the speed of the earth rotating around the sun is much larger, I'm not too worried about people jumping up and down.

If everyone in Idi's family jumped at once, we'd probably end up crashing into the Sun.

Hm, you un-mystified something there. But on the site I saw a video of a German Professor from Munich University, which has quite a good (if not the best) reputation for physics (and overall anyway) in Germany.
Hm, don't forget, the momentum of the jump would be added perpendicular to the earth's current (circular) motion. Sort of "knocking it out of its old orbit".
But you're right, however you put it, something 10 ^ 13 times lighter than the earth WON'T manage to have an influence. As long as it's a living creature not at least (not talking about meteorites here)...
But these scientists MUST have some sort of facts, or are they plain stupid or what?

Re: World Jump Day
every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it
it might work heh

Their website had surprisingly few facts--and no equations.
For a minute I thought it was a global warming website.

If i remember correctly theres a force called 'gravity'.
this 'gravity' is an attractive force between all mass. So when someone jumps, when in the air they pull the earth towards them and vice versa. you'll find jumping has much less affect than what SI said.

Re: World Jump Day
If we sent Idi to the moon and told him it was made of cheese, he'd eat the damn lot.
I bet that would cause a larger shift in the earth's spin than a bunch of people jumping around.
Mind you, just sending Idi off the planet could be enough to do the job anyway, I guess the problem is finding a heavy-lift (OMGLOLBEANSAGOGO) vehicle capable of getting him to escape velocity.

gravity is not an external force though, it's already included in the factors of the earth's motion, 6 billion people jumping at the same time isn't, therefore, an external force -
of course this whole idea is silly because the whole 'world jump day' thing just honestly sounds bogus, all i'm saying is that there's a 'slight' possibility that it might work

To the person who neg repped me with 'physical bullshit' and didnt sign it:
I'll assume it was due to my lack of explanation not the fact that you're a ****ing tw*t that was behind your comment.
But i wont. You're a ****ing tw*t, read a physics book.
