Maths fun :D

Ok, i have a very open ended homework question.
It's basically "give something that has a density, and describe what the change in density means"
like boring examples are air pressure, high -> low air pressure is the direction the wind blows.
I want to find a fun density etc and am completely open to suggestions.
Remember, I have to hand this in, so nothing *too* awful.

This is some kind of investigation or experiment.

examples given by the lecturer:
density of smoke, direction to run for your life (high -> low)
density of phermones, direction of 'randy' bee
density of conservative voters, direction of labour campaigners
temperature, direction of holidaymakers,

Maybe you could investigate how the average density of internet users has changed since modems started filtered down to the masses.

It's fairly clear that you, and most people, can ream off an endless list of these.

I don't see what's particularly gained from doing this on here, even ignoring the fact that this thread isn't "maths fun" or "maths" or "fun".

Maybe you should hit him with your e-penis and someone else can hit him with one of a similar size and if one of them hurts more than the other it'd mean that that e-penis was denser and he could go into his maths class and talk about this experiment and then he'd be the most popular girl in school!

it's meant to be examples of things like densities and what the change in density signifies.

How is temperature a density? Do you just mean any field?

phi = property value density. Grad phi is the direction of success.
phi = the sum of inverse square distance to each icecream van. Grad phi is the direction to walk in to get to such a van (yes, over a cliff).
phi = quality of soil. Grad phi is the tendency of a model worm.
phi = change in density of grass over time. Grad phi is the direction you might expect footprints in.

Sounds like your professor likes to pretend vector calculus is useful for more than electromagnetism and fluid dynamics. Anything three dimensional is going to be a physical phenomenon and any witty two dimensional scalar field is going to have little relevance as a field: the gradient might matter but nothing more specific, like the Lapacian. Prove me wrong, kids!

I'm a second year degree student :| we have stories in the middle of each lecture, and he takes in footballs to help illustrate parametrizations. He also chops potatoes on the front desk and sticks them to the black board to help illustrate 3d integration.

Oh a retraction: obviously temperature is a density if you consider the physics involved, I just wouldn't usually consider the particle model relevant. :-/ All these examples are about how to get what you want using a kind of potential field. I feel vectors cannot help us escape this facet of the human condition.

How about,
phi = amount of red, ambiance in 3D or hue on a 2D surface. The gradient is the direction of chi in my simplified feng shui.
