The godfather of all internet forums ...
... the usenet.
Ok, before I start talking too much bullshit, here you go:
http://www.google.com/googlegroups/a...nounce_20.html
I didn't know that Google's newsgroup archives go back THAT long in time.
Really interesting to read the VERY first posts mentioning Microsoft, Windows, the CD or the WWW now.
And for the less geeky people, not only IT topics there: I got a bit of goose pimples when reading the first post from the free east Berlin 1989.
Or about AIDS: Did they really think it was contagious via saliva? That must haven given you a REALLY bad feeling at parties then :-/
Ah well, I still think it's a great and bit different way of "history", you know...
Just imagine they'd quote GD in two decades about some news articles or whatever (ok sorry if I failed to deliver some excitement here).

I can't really imagine waiting until 1997 to see all nine parts

Re: The godfather of all internet forums ...
This is one of the more depressing things about current forums - they won't be available in a systematic fashion in years to come. Or perhaps they will, but it seems unlikely outside of the larger forums, and backups are generally in a haphazard fashion (e.g. some user saves some random post here and there).
Also, very few people post under their own names anymore. Which is kind of I guess.
I was relatively late to Usenet, although I seem to remember having some posts on Fido.Net in about 1993 or so. My earliest Usenet posts that I can find are 1996-ish.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't ever not called 'A New Hope'.

Re: The godfather of all internet forums ...
I started posting to Usenet in 1991 and continued for about 9 years or so. It's kind of cool they managed to save most of it.

But your "youth" or any other "past" can haunt you back pretty quick. Not even any "illegal" or "bad" stuff, just some strange ideas or not very thought-through ideas are enough, you know...
Then suddenly the real names can be a problem.

If you're posting to a world-readable forum, why would you be particularly worried about future embarrassment? Besides, it's only Usenet. No one's ever going to look at most of that crud anyway (or get worked up about it if they do).

I always posted to Usenet under my real name.

Re: The godfather of all internet forums ...
I cringed upon discovering some posts I made when usenet was my GD of sorts and until now thought had long ago disappeared into the mists of cyberspace.
Heh, on a sidenote, I tried to mask my real name by using a fake one in my posts, however when I later replied to the same thread I forgot to change my real name doh!

I think you'll get a lot more "real life" -> online crossover in future. You know all those bores who insist on telling you every famous person they went to school with? Just imagine the days when people talk about the time they posted on the same forum as xyz before they were famous.
I generally posted under my real-name (I think) and there isn't much I'm yet of embarrassed about. But you'd need to be a pretty small person to be afraid to say "Yeah, I thought that 10 years ago, now I realise I was wrong".
