Re: What is Boxing Day?
Guy Fawkes day is the day on which the UK celebrates the capture and execution of Guy Fawkes , who attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with a large stash of gunpowder. Hence the popular ditty
"Remember Remember , the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot"

Re: What is Boxing Day?
You have a holiday for the execution of someone? Is it an official holiday where they close school and banks or is it one that nobody really pays attention too, like Arbor day?

Re: What is Boxing Day?
Its not an official holiday as such.
Its more of an excuse to burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, or the currently most publicaly hated person.

the day after Christmas in Canada and the US...stores want to get rid of that years stock so they run silly cheap sales (generally 40% - 80% off)

Re: What is Boxing Day?
The killing of Catholics is clearly something that needs to be celebrated in any humane and decent society.
Boxing Day is just St Stephen's Day or something similar. It's a Bank Holiday in the UK, probably just to make Xmas seem like a bigger deal (it'd be even more of an anti-climax if we all had to go back to work the next day). Historically I think the term "boxing" comes from empty boxes which used to be filled for the poor or something equally stupid.

Re: What is Boxing Day?
Boxing Day is traditionaly when people like the postman, milkman and binmen came round with boxes to your door to collect their yearly tip, hence Boxing Day
and Guy Fawkes night is just an excuse for people to let off fireworks for a week, like New Years really

Re: What is Boxing Day?
Guy Fawkes night is more often than not referred to as "Bonfire Night", and with the rising level of stupidity and ignorance, it is likely a hefty amount of people "celebrating" have never heard of Guy Fawkes, or atleast dont associate him with the night itself.
So perhaps it started off as celebrating the death of a catholic fellow, but i wouldnt say it is the same now.

Re: What is Boxing Day?
The people near me have no idea who Guy Fawkes was, they just call it 'Bonfire Night' or 'Firework Night' and light fireworks and bonfires anywhere from a month before or a month after. Similarly with halloween, they 'trick or treat' months in advance.

Re: What is Boxing Day?
Comedy "You put on boxing gloves and bash your partner in 3 rounds then bite off their ear in the 3rd like Mike Tyson claiming you were hungry and didn't eat on Xmas day" option.

Re: What is Boxing Day?
Boxing day is when you box up all the crap presents you got and take them back to the shops.

why take them back when you can be seen as generous and pass them onto other people
I gave the woollen jumper some old lady gave me to my next door neighbour and they were well chuffed - now that was priceless

Re: What is Boxing Day?
Boxing day is from Victorian times. Christmas was deemed a 'holy day', so presents weren't opened then. They (the "christmas boxes") were opened the next day (boxing day).
I win.

Re: What is Boxing Day?
But you're wrong.
The holiday's roots can be traced to Britain, where Boxing Day is also known as St. Stephen's Day. Reduced to the simplest essence, its origins are found in a long-ago practice of giving cash or durable goods to those of the lower classes. Gifts among equals were exchanged on or before Christmas Day, but beneficences to those less fortunate were bestowed the day after.

It sounds a lot like St. Patrick's Day. Do you have a parade too?

It's not really like St Patricks day at all, as far as the two compare in England.
No, we don't have a parade.
It's JUST fireworks and a bonfire, which traditionally has a Guy burned in effigy.

OH NO! Worst thing that could happen
I mean, why should we enjoy an unimportant celebration, if we can make ourselves less entertained?!

Celebration without cause is less meaningful; isnt' (say) someone's 21st more important than just a random party?

I assumed the words "stupidity and ignorance" were suggesting that you were angry or annoyed at it.

Yeah, sure have a cause.
e.g. Christmas - presents
birthday - presents
This cause is shit though, and people who believe strongly in the cause don't enjoy bonfire night more than people who just enjoy 'explosions yeah!!!'.

Aah, no, i was using those as reasons to why people are forgetting what the night was initially about, why it is now "Bonfire Night". Hence the words "rising levels of". :)
