sounds like a little mini-fan that turns when the wind hits the blades, mini blades turn which in turn spins a shaft that has a mini alternator to generate the magnetic field applied on a mini field winding then turns when the alternator turns, and a mini armature generating 3 watts into the celphone battery - hmm.. kinda interesting actually

Handy to stick just outside your car window and you can charge your mobile fer nuffin.
Though the cost of charging them doesn't usually affect mobile phone purchases.

True, kind of. Assuming you were driving for a reason other than to charge the phone so the cost of petrol is ruled out, the increase in drag from opening the window and hence increased use of petrol would cost more than recharging the phone at home

By and large, it can probably be assumed that electricity is cheaper per unit of energy than burning petrol in an internal combustion engine. If that was not the case, there wouldn't be the economic impetus behind electric cars.
Therefore, if we consider the laws of thermodynamics*, we find that, as the more efficient energy source (even without taking into account that the recharging method will be infinitely more efficient than some kind of dynamo arrangement) is the electricity, it will therefore cost less to recharge from electricity. Significantly less when you factor in efficiency.
This "device" is for people who don't have the choice between the two, plain and simple.
*Laws of thermodynamics mentioned because you have to assume 1st (and, to an extent 2nd) laws for this comparison to be valid.
