Technically, that's incorrect too. It needs to be mod elephant mod banana sin theta (in the direction of the right hand rule) not just elephant banana sin theta (in the direction of the right hand rule).

but component wise, in any given 3 variable cartesian reference frame, you can write it in terms of i j and k components

That's rather disingenious though, because that assumes certain things about the space the vectors are in (the most trivial example is that they're 3 dimensional). Obviously you can generalise it to n dimensions (for example), but that's not really a simplification.

The cross product is only defined in three dimensions.
( and in seven.)

I thought that might be the case, on thinking about it.

Re: I saw this ...
can you generalise it for us mark? this forum is not complete without the cross product defined for an arbitrary number of dimensions.

Don't be rude!
[edit]
But assuming that you define a cross product as a perpendicular vector of a particular length, the unit vector that you multiply by would be 0i + 0j + (any vector comprised of the other dimensions of length 1) assuming that the two vectors being crossed are in the xy plane.

I agree that the maths group are anatomical pains, however, I would locate the pain considerably south of the head.
