AAC to Ac3
on the fly...

so when i press 'play' on an aac file it outputs via the optical lead to ac3 format (i.e. 5.1 that my cinema thing can understand)

is there such a thing...infact is there any way to resample things on the fly and output them to spdif. if there isnt i spy a gap in the market!!

yes but aac isnt understood by the home theatre system. ac3 is...

I think you are getting confused.

AAC is an audio compression format much like MP3, not a pure digital audio stream.

Send it how you like to your stereo, it's not going to make a difference.

I'm with Mr. Bass on this.
If it goes over the SP-DIF it's in whatever crazy format sony and phillips devised, and nothing else. It's not possible for programs to transmit to it, it's all handled by the soundcard.
