Just got this new book out from the local library.
Entitled "The New Barbarian manifesto" How to survive the information age. Just read the preface about the author. I find myself agreeing with what it says; I`ll quote a little here:
"He rejects the long-held view of information technology as our benign liberator from mundane work. Instead he regards it as the seed for a new society, in which the winners in the knowledge economy will construct their own `smart regions` founded on libertarian principles and enlightened self-interest.
The losers, however, face a bleak future. The evils of socialism, racism, and religious prejudice will prey on the economic insecurity of the masses, as transnational businesses roam the globe in search of ever cheaper labour. If this scenario seems unlikely, look at the life of prisoners in US jails who operate telesales services for major US companies"
Feel free to discuss. Also can someone tell me if it is true that prisoners in some US jails carry out telesales work?

I do believe that some US prisoners work in jail doing telesales. It's cheaper as they don't have to pay as much.

Sounds like the kind of thing Nod would publish when he was drunk.

Sound like something from the early 90's. Cyberpunk is dead, etc.

I'm sure some do. Most prisoners (in the US) do some work, usually to keep them busy and to nominally provide them some "job skills" or at least "work experience." Because of complaints of 'unfair' competition by outside employees, they often get shuttled towards the lowest paying and least desirable jobs--like telesales.
Using prison inmates to undercut the labor market is a very old practice, however; so I'm not sure why it's being cited in support of some supposedly new phenomenon.

But aren't they working in all prisons in the 'free' world? I heard stories ranging from making clothingpins to doing the hospital laundry.
