Hegel.

Can someone give me a basic outline of Hegel's philosophy (Partiularly his political stuff like teh theory of the state etc.) either themselves or by pointing me to some good sites.

The Plato stanford entry on Hegel might be a good place to start. His political philosophy is outlined in the section on 'Philosophy of Right' , but Hegel was a pathological systemiser so it's unlikely to make sense unless you take it as being a part of his system as a whole (and probably not even then given how full of shit he was).

Oh yeah, and theres a fair amount about Hegel on marxists.org, although I assume a lot of it is going to be coloured by Marxist interpretations.

To be completely honest, I doubt you're going to learn much about Hegel by reading the internet - you're going to have to get a book. There are some philosophers who can be summarized in relatively short pieces and Hegel certainly isnt one of them. Peter Singer wrote a brief, easy-to-understand intro to Hegel as part of the "Very Short Introduction.../Past Masters" series which I thought was ok, although I'm unsure what kind of reputation it has amongst actual Hegelians.


edit: As far as I can remember, it focused fairly heavily on his politics too.

I checked out "Introducing... Hegel" from that Introducing... series and it was almost entirely about his philosophy of mind / unfolding of spirit mumbo jumbo, with maybe a page on politics.

I'm not expert, however I was taught this: (in about 2 minutes)

Hegel said history is as follows: thesis -> anti-thesis -> synthesis -> new-thesis -> anti-thesis. Spirit/history working itself out.

Marx was a Hegelian and applied this to Communism. Feudalism -> Capitalism -> Socialism etc etc etc. And the struggle described in Hegel's work could be applied to class conflict. And but he stated, unlike Hegel, there would be an end-point, and Communism fitted the bill.

The person who taught me this was no philosophy lecturer, I am no philosophy student. But basically Hegel talked quite a bit about History and spirit working itself out.
