Anyway, as for Obiwan's mobile related joke, I don't think anything will beat my wife's comment :

We were watching a program about the passengers in one of the Sept 11th jets. The passengers had learnt that the terrorists were going to crash the plane, and so they valiantly decided to struggle for control of the aircraft. Before they did so, someone phoned their partner. Remember at this point, the pilot was dead, almost everyone thought they were going to die.

My wife's comment : "I didn't think you were allowed to use a mobile on a plane?"

It depends. The G3 ones I think are really short ranged, but other ones have more than enough.

Just managed to hunt this down from all the "we hate mobile phone masts because they cause cancer" sites.

Macrocells are currently the most common base station and communicate with phones at a distance of roughly 20 miles. The largest of the cellsites, they are typically mounted on rooftops or on lattice towers in greenfield sites.

Apparently mobile phone companies don't you like you using your phone when in a plane because the signal spreads out, clogging the system. I guess it hits multiple masts or something.

do 3G use packet switching for the actual phonecalls. I heard they were considering implementing that, or at least some kind of bandwidth limitation, bearing in mind a good half of a phonecall is spent being silent.

they always hit multiple masts, that's how switchover works. The problem is more to do with it jamming electronics... the same goes for hospitals.

Previously, it was all being able to talk from anywhere, but now it's being able to talk EVERYWHERE.

heh, that is part of the reason I think wireless networking would be better. most people aren't going to check their email while walking down the stre....*steps in front of a bus*
so generally the 3G is useless. however if places like cafes became little hubs, then it would be much better since people could sit down and check stuff...

but yeap, the infrastructure of course is an issue. the Government say much and do little. I think the telecoms companies should have just been forced to do it, they have enough money.

We need 2nd Class Post and the like, and the only way to ensure that the nonprofitable areas are kept going is to have a monopoly on the profitable ones.

However, that isn't a case for the phones.

for the phones it is more of an infrastructure thing, everyone uses the same lines, so it is pointless "competing" it drives prices down, but the governmnet could do that anyway if they could be bothered.

about RM: they made most of their money on packages and things like that, and now all those are being privatised, so all the RM has left is unprofitable business, namely letters.
