I've wondered how you fight with elephants. Do you just stomp the enemy or do you shoot arrows and things from the thing on its back?

Unless there's 2 Rome games coming out, I believe I played the demo of that one a coupla weeks back. Interesting rts, instead of building individual units you train entire companies of 16 or so guys at once.
Only 'flaw' I really noticed in the demo was that the companies have absolutely no problem with walking right thru each other, having 2-3 guys standing in the same spot and still managing to march single file.
Otherwise a solid looking game, terrain seems to be much more useful than in the average game.

Why the hell is 'SPQR' on one of the banners?
Also, looks like this game will require 'quite' the computer.

I know what it means, the point is that SPQR is that this term is used at the beginning of public announcements.
Not printed on banners during a fight.
And its Senatus Populusque Romanus --> The Senate AND the People of Rome.

It was on the banners according to my history lessons (admittedly a long time ago).

mmm I dunnoh
It usually was written on public announcements or on buildings / pillars that had a 'message', or rules for city behaviour etc etc.
It 'is' possible that they put it on the banners to show the enemy that they were acting on the authority of the roman senate / people. Though it seems strange

I dunno... The vegetation are mere billboarded sprites, and the characters have a relatively low polycount, all with the same texture. This speeds it up quite a bit. Although a few thousand characters from close up will have an impact.
The terrain looks nice, but is nothing fancy. Lightmapped shading.
Also the fact that Scoot mentioned: characters moving through eachother, indicates that it's not THAT heavy.
I don't know what detail level the screenshots are at, but it doesn't look all that fancy.

I saw that too yeah, my main concern however is with the many many many numbers of them, depending on how 'autonomously' they act it will get harder to render I suppose.
Also the 'size' of the battlefield will matter lots, could go either way

You have distance fog for that. The best invention since sliced bread.
Also I assume that they use very low polygon models for characters that are further away (8 polys or so, instead of a few 100 for models close up). Perhaps they even sprite the models that are very far away. That will save a tremendous amount of rendering times.

Yeah they use that in AC2 as well, looks pretty ****ty at times but definatly saves a LOT of resources.

The SPQR was actually *Everywhere*, on buildings, on monuments, on scrolls and tablets, on all proclamations, on ships... furthermore, every Roman 'Eagle' or legion Standard had 'SPQR' on it, as did the fasces, who preceeded every legion into enemy territory.
If you visit Rome today you can still see SPQR carved into old walls and pillars. If you are looking for it, it is surprising how common it is.

if you realize that pretty much is a 'signature' it means 'the senate and the people of rome' where you should realize that the following should be 'have decided that' or 'have authorized' etc etc. it basically means 'blessed by the senate and the people of rome'.
