Re: Creationism thread for 24/2/05
"Hello. I've searched everywhere I can think of on the internet and can't find the information I'm looking for. I'm trying to find out how big a cedar tree might have been around the 1,000 - 2,000 BC time frame (when the book of "Job" was written in the Bible). The reason is because there is a Bible verse that describes an animal that moves its tail like a cedar tree (Job 40:15-19). It seems that only a dinosaur fits this description. "

Re: Creationism thread for 24/2/05
I just can't see how they make the jump from 'he moveth his tail like a cedar to 'his tail was the same size as a cedar'.
I'm quite sure it's meant to mean 'he moveth his tail majestically' or similar.
nod do you look at these sites to purposely hurt your brain?!

I wouldn't describe it as funny. There are plenty of more suiting adjectives to describe it.

Re: Creationism thread for 24/2/05
The "tree expert" they emailed told them that the most commonly referred-to cedar in the Middle East grows to about 40m.
The biggest dinosaurs - the Sauropoda - grew about 25-30m in length, about a third of which was tail (~8-10m).
I guess once you start to ignore logic, you can never really stop.

Re: Creationism thread for 24/2/05
Seeing as "all" the dinosaurs were wiped out anyway, how are we supposed to have evolved from them? So why is justification needed that dinosaurs existed...

I believe the new Sauropod found in Argentina (the best description I can get of it is from 2000 and as far as I know it remains unclassified and therefore unnammed) is larger than the previously biggest Sauropod, the Argentinosaurus. This new beast measures between 40 and 52 metres. The Argentinasaurs, I believe, measured roughly 40 metres.
Of course, I would assume that any christian who followed the above link and found it to be true would suggest that comparing the size of the tail to a Cedar tree is not meant to be taken literally, but just as an exaggeration of the beasts actual size.
Of course it is all a load of rubbish, as no dinosaur remains have been found that post-date the Cretaceous. There is, however, still much speculation regarding a link between dinosaurs and birds. This is still just theory, though, and the missing link that was found a while ago has come up against much criticism. Still quite interesting, though.

Yes, I was deliberately leaving that one alone since it may still turn out to be another Ultrasauros. But let's assume it's a separate species for this thread.
Since the passage quoted is describing an animal's tail and comparing it to the size of a tree, the size of the tree must be directly compared to the tail of the dinosaur. But even so, it doesn't really tell you anything other than ruling out "species with tails that aren't like a tree".
Not to mention the fact that the beast being described is something that never actually existed, so any attempt to "find it" in the animal kingdom is just completely ****ing retarded. Those muppets only need to read the last four parts of Job 1 to understand what's going on - instead they have stripped out the context by only presenting the description of physical characteristics, and not why that description was made.

Re: Creationism thread for 24/2/05
I love the way they take the physical descripton as literal but then don't take the part that it could suck up the entire Jordan river in its mouth.

Re: Creationism thread for 24/2/05
i used to go to evangelical sunday school till i was 13-14, and i remember one day they sat us down and read that passage. Then explained it proved that dinosaurs existed in the time of Job.
I can't say i was particularly keen on it then, and age has done nothing to improve it :/

Re: Creationism thread for 24/2/05
It's never been taught to me from within the Catholic system that Creationism is the way. In fact the priest at our school distinctly told us that Adam & Eve is not ment to be literal and that we did evolve over millions of years.
The Vatican has even recently acknowledged Darwin's theories.
It would seem Creationism is being pushed by religious institutions mostly within the U.S. which are related to Evangelists, Baptists and so on.

If I belived everything they said to me, including "I've got a Mars bar in my pocket for you, get it out", then I'd be in a more traumatised state now than I am.
