Its a symptom of the modern academic structure. When you base a large amount of people's pay on the amount of 'new stuff' they write, youre going to end up with a very large amount of worthless crap being outputted. I'm sure the calculation is perfectly fine. It's the random assignment of probabilities and the trumped-up "importance" of earthbound events that give me problems.

Yes, but I accept that using the passive voice in that context was poor grammar.

edit: actually I'm not sure. I think the using passivity there was grammatically correct, but it makes the sentence read 'funny'.
