[Football] The Old Boys Network - McLaren for England
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ls/4969592.stm
Anyone surprised by this shouldnt be.
Hes probably one of the weakest candidates out there, but he keeps his nose clean, helps with the England setup just now, has key players backing him, and thus, was almost always going to get it.
As a Scotsman, im laughing. I think hes going to be a very poor choice indeed.

could have done worse.
I blame the media and the lack of any decent English managers myself.

I blame the media. It's a shame that Martin O'Neill interviewed poorly as well - but nowadays it seems to be how you present yourself that matters, as opposed to your results on the pitch.

He was - he left Celtic in May 2005 to look after her - but it is known that he was willing and able to take the England job.

And yet we will never ever stop believing we can actually qualify for, and do well in, major tournaments again as a nation.

Scotland got Walter Smith. The best that we could have got under any circumstances.
England got Steve McLaren. And there were MUCH better candidates. Alas, the FA is incompetent.

Re: [Football] The Old Boys Network - McLaren for England
1) England are now settling for second best
2) Only Bruce would have been worse. McLaren is a whiner with the best of them.
3) I really want to smack him in the fact for his smugness when he wins, and his whining when they lose. He might be the best of the English managers, but that's only cos he's had cash to piss up the wall, yet achieves midtable and some cup runs against ordinary opposition and becomes good enough after the thread of being relegated.
"We could have got better" should never apply for England. Thank **** I trade in any england success for pompey success season in, season out, so I don't get upset when England lose. For far too long we've had England teams playing without passion, and this is just a continuation of that.

It would be good to see Pearce put into a McLaren style role so he can take over a few years down the line with some experience.

Yeah I've heard this too.
After seeing Pearce wearing a Derby shirt and kissing the badge when he scored, he's got rid of the only thing I didn't like about him.
PS - Who neg repped me for my comment about Scotland above? Just curious like.
