Grrr... Swiss people
Why can't they speak normal German?
I just had one on the phone, and I had no idea what the hell he was talking about. He spoke with this unclear Swiss-German-French dialect. Not that I can speak German, on the contrary, I've come to realize recently that my German is even more shit than I thought, but atleast they should try to make themselves understood instead of uttering a few words that sound like German but quite aren't.
I think I'm lucky I haven't had a French person on the phone yet. I don't think they will be much impressed with my limited French vocabulary that just spans "bierre" and "riz avec ragout de boeff" or something like that.
Next time I'm going to ask if they can speak English, otherwise I might just have an instant foreign-language-blackout.

Re: Grrr... Swiss people
it's because they don't speak german anywhere east of the Elbe or south of Frankfurt, let alone Switzerland or Austria.

Re: Grrr... Swiss people
It´s not called Schweizerdeutsch for nothing, but next time just ask if they speak german too and piss them off (if possible, they seem to be kinda neutral in all aspects)

Re: Grrr... Swiss people
In german at school, we were played a song sung in Swiss- (or austrian maybe) German, about a guy who lived near a nuclear plant and who grew an extra ear or something. It was quite an amusing song as I remember.

I'm from the province Limburg here in the Netherlands, so I speak what the rest of the Netherlands claims to be a retarded dialect. And the dialect that I speak in my home town, is completely different than the dialect of a town 10 miles from here (nothing like Meijel's dialect).
But I also speak "normal" Dutch.
Should be the same with Swiss really. I mean, if you claim to have German as a national language (65% is German in Switserland I read somewhere), then atleast speak it properly.

Re: Grrr... Swiss people
well, instead of using the last 400 years for inventing their own laguage like you people did, they spend the time with messing up three perfectly fine other ones.

Re: Grrr... Swiss people
Surely Townies haven't taken the dramatic step in claiming they speak a unique language?
We all know they do, but none would have the cognitive capacity to realise.

I meant that they'd claim to speak English ("IIIIInnn-gerrrr-land till I die!" etc.) but set about basterdising it on every occasion until it is unintelligable to most speakers of said language.

They also speak French in a different way, but all the words are the same I believe.
