Where's the disadvantage
of having English football teams permitted only to recruit, sign players from their town of origin.
I'm not being racist, but when half your damned team is 'not of English origin', how is this beneficial for English football?
(For the more obtuse, I don't necessarily agree with the viewpoint expressed above, it's merely to ignite discussion)

the young players wouldn't have the same experience of working with the great players
eg.
zola has done a lot to help chelsea kids improve, even if just by watching him on training ground
same with bergkamp, klinsmann, etc
and that's just foreign players, if you limited it to only local players it'd be even worse

But conversely, local talent would be nurtured instead of being overlooked for 8mil contracts with Frenchies noone's ever heard of.

if they're good enough they'll come through regardless
eg
rooney ofc, ameobi at newcastle, pennant at arsenal etc
having foreign players around won't make them any worse, only the opposite
yeah, they might have to work for a first team place more or move on to another smaller club but they will be better players and our game will be better for it

I make the argument only because 'way back when' 'Liverpool' was a team of players representing Liverpool the city.
Now it's 'Liverpool', the team of players run by a Frenchman (who's been the best manager we've had in years, granted), with a very foreign team most of whom can't coherently speak the language.
Football's become less of a sport and more of a brand as a result. And normally I like capitalism, but in this instance it annoys me.

but the standard in general is far better nowadays (with a few obvious exceptions like the "pass and move" liverpool, the dutch "total football", etc)

True.
It just annoys me that my views are rarely consistent. I realise the game has probably benefitted from the introduction of foreign players. I'm just concerned about the lack of identity a team now has.

a teams identity is more personified by their fans, imho. the fans arent getting paid 30 grand a sub appearance.

The problem is that towns/countries with no competitive players would not ever GET competitive players, since noone in that town/country would give a **** about the sport. It's the color and pattern of your suit that determines whether you're "one of us", not where you come from, what you look like, or what languages you speak.

but then all the really good players would be drowned out by all the crap players in their team. there would be no enhancement of quality. it's like forcing all the best students to sit in a class full of idiots. they might still do well, but not half as well as they would in a class full of other clever kids.
