why are microsoft works and word incompatible? is there some specific reason or is it just microsoft being cnuts?

dunno, just trying quickly at work for someone as i have never used works before, works comes in a .wps format so i tried changing it to .rtf and .doc but it just came out as gibberish.
it was just the fact that word and works were not compatible that threw me slightly

I never used to have problems importing one to the other back in the days when i had Works. iirc you can save a Works file as a Word file and vice versa.

Yeah. Valid point. I have just tried it. You can save from Word document as .wps and opened in it works but not the other way.
I think it is another aspect of the limiting that Works offers.

i didnt even know that works is still in production.
my word-version (thats 2002) can open works-2000-files, not sure if that is of any use, but if you click file -> open you can select a file-type below the field that shows the filename.

i use office2k3 and i must say that i am rather happy about it, as in, i do not know any other program which enables me to work together with other people on an essay so easily. it is not perfect, but it helps me doing what i need to do

OpenOffice is pretty shit really. It might be a good replacement for Works (I've never used the latter) but is nowhere close to Office/Word). You can get a student/teacher version of MS Office for under £100 I believe, which I don't think is particularly expensive. Or, for reports/documents etc. use latex (through Lyx if you're not into self-harm).
