Just had a thought about astropods.
Cant we release the astropod from a class into its own class (AP).
This way the stats could be such that a number of variations, rather than just 2 per race.
Astropods would be targeted by ships in their own right.
Example
Roid "RO"
Astropod "AP" RO
Interceptor "FI" FI CO AP
Spider "CO" FI AP
War Frigate "FR" CO FI
Starcruiser "CR" FI FR
Not all Ships would have AP as a target and I feel this (with the right stats) could lead to more variations with in a race.
One thought would be that all ships targeting AP would have a higher init, so other ships can try to reduce losses.

Meh.

Re: Just had a thought about astropods.
With variance comes complexity. This will no doubt fry the brains of stats makers and those playing the game even further than it currently does. If we can not balance stats under the current conditions then adding in another variable is not going to make this easier.
I'd welcome a move closer to "back to basics".

Re: Just had a thought about astropods.
Surely there would have to be three classes of pod anyway, one for each eta? That may be necessary for coding purposes but even if not then the concept of the fake is killed stone dead by just having one AP class to shoot at.

Re: Just had a thought about astropods.
I dont like the idea as proposed; having pods fired on separately does not make much sense to me - surely unless huge numbers are built they would just be killed... unless all ships only target them second, in which case they would never be killed! Either is a bit extreme for me.
Instead a much more sensible way of doing this would simply be for there to be a standard pod for each class. Once a player has finished researching light hulls they would have the chance of designating some pod options; fi class, co class, or none. They would then do the same when finished medium hulls; fr class, de class or none, and heavy hulls. The player would be allowed to designate up to 2 pod types (or three - something for the statsmaker to decide? it could possible also be up to the statsmaker whether to allow 1 or 2 per metaclass). In every other way they would be the same as today's pods.

this doesnt make much more difference than Mr Lobster suggested.
Even if it just 1 type of pod, i would assume it would match the eta of the rest of the fleet type. No other ships then it travels at fi/co speed.
Either way, targetting of just pods and having it as it own class is a no go imo aswell.

Re: Just had a thought about astropods.
would make covering just pods way too easy (you could just get the defships from gal/pl or whatnot that shoot pods and don't get shot by the other ships themselves), so definitely a big no from me as well. I'd rather remove classes than add more at this point, making the game simpler for (possible) new players.

Eh? I think you misunderstood me. I was not arguing for having pods different from other ships but the same. Under my proposal a fr pod would be a fr pod it just not be a locust or vampire or whatever else just one type (or indeed it could be still different pods for each race, It makes no odds to my suggestion, but that would mean a lot of extra ships!). The only difference my suggestion makes from current is allowing each player to decide which pod classes they want to use, and that is the only thing it was meant to change.

I like the idea but needs a but of work around the stats?
