[FOOTBALL] So it's getting 'tasty' on the South Coast
Lowe, Mandaric and Prutton get 'stuck in'
Obviously I am on the blue side of this one (although I think we're in trouble if we don't get some bodies in) but for the neutral perspective, this could be a nasty affair on the pitch by the looks of things, which will no doubt entertain you more than our previous encounters. It seems as with the managerial/player switches the players will be a lot more involved and this can only be a good thing for those not involved this saturday.
Obviously there will be fans who think this is a very much irrelevant fixture, but this is one of the nastiest derbies in the best tie of the FA cup, so I thought I'd open it up for GD's "expert analysis".

southampton-portsmouth is live on bbc1 too so I look forward to seeing players kicking chunks out of each other for my amusement... (and a draw so they have to do it all again at fratton park)

Re: [FOOTBALL] So it's getting 'tasty' on the South Coast
I am SOOOO watching this game. Its got all the makings of a ****ing warzone. And thats before you consider whats going to happen on the terraces.
I can hear the chants now of "Hes only a poor little scummer" from the blue half, and "Youre just a small team in Havant" from the Saints (this forum needs more Southampton fans to throw abuse back in the direction of the Pompey Faithful).

Soton will beat pompy, both teams will have 10 men at full time, redknapp will run the game from midfeild (i have no idea if he's gonna play)
Were to busy dreaming up songs too so we'll probably loose, the best effort so far is for big dunc if he;s on the bench, to the tune of fog on the tyne

BlueSq have a ****ing ace offer on this match.
Place any £5 single on the game, and if any player is sent off, you are given a credit to gamble with to the value of his shirt number. and its cumalative.
Heres hoping for Southampton win with 3 sendings off each side!

Re: [FOOTBALL] So it's getting 'tasty' on the South Coast
Ok, I know this off-topic slightly.
Quote:
Nottingham Forest have today accepted an offer from Southampton of cash-plus-players in return for Andy Reid.
Southampton manager Harry Redknapp has offered cash payments in excess of £3million, plus two established members of his first team squad.
Forest Chairman Nigel Doughty said: "I promised Andy that should we receive an offer that was right for Nottingham Forest we would allow him the opportunity to fulfil his ambiton of playing in the Premiership.
"The offer made by Southampton fulfils that criteria, at the same time as providing Gary Megson with two players that he feels would strengthen his squad at The City Ground.
"We have had a number of derisory offers from one other Premiership club - none of which were acceptable.
"One of my duties as Chairman of Nottingham Forest is to ensure that no club takes advantage of our position in the Championship. While I'm Chairman, no player will leave this Club on the cheap.
"Financially, the Club continues to progress with the repayment of its debt and move towards our goal of self-sufficiency in the medium term."
|
Any idea which Southampton players it could be?

This is the first pompey thread I could find to bump but just heard a rumour that their new managerial team will be David Pleat and Raddy Antic. If so I feel very sorry for them

Re: [FOOTBALL] So it's getting 'tasty' on the South Coast
This was posted on a Forest forum I frequent:
Quote:
I've just been told the information from a very good source, otherwise I wouldn't mention.
Strachan has just agreed to join Pompey after Mandaric increased his pay offer. Strachan was also offered the West Ham job behind Pardew's back but turned it down.
--------------------------------------------------
I also believe Man City have told Strachan's agent to forget any possible position there has Pearce will most certainly be given the job.
Hence Strachan's U-turn led him to grovel back to Portsmouth.
It should be revealed in the next couple of days and Strachan wants to start straight-away.
|
It was posted yesterday so we'll have to see...

Strachan's probably the best we could get at this time - he'd motivate the team to the finish line, I'd hope.

Sup Alain Perrin.
It wasnt going to be strachan at this stage in the season. Hed want a blank canvas, and assurances the team he takes over isnt going to get relegated.

Best of luck to him, he seems to have a decent enough pedigree.
Should we stay up he's got an absolute cxxt of a job rebuilding the squad. Hope he gives the squad a good kick up the arse for saturday.

thats very true ive been to a forest v derby match although still not the same atmoshphere as vill v blues, theres something missing

Newcastle Sunderland.

once again theres summet missing from the newcastle/sunderland match.
The reason why villa/blues is so contested is that because the grounds and fans are so close to each other, and have been brought up to hate each other. Vill and Blues arent two different towns, they are literally 5 mins away from each other. This is the difference between saints, pompey, newcastle, sunderland, derby, forest, admitadly all great derbies, but im afraid the Villa v Blues tops the list of the best.

i'm a hibs fan. the south coast derby and the newcastle/sunderland derby are bigger than the edinburgh one. villa/brum is smaller again. it's your derby so of course you put more importance on it; in this case, you are just wrong.
and yes, brum is in the midlands. but i'd say the lowest in the country you can be to get away with derision towards the south is round about macclesfield.

I disagree tbh, brummies are nothing like southerners, we are closer to northerners, but we are unique. I still cannot see how newcastle/sunderland and pompey/saints are bigger derbies than villa/blues.

Re: [FOOTBALL] So it's getting 'tasty' on the South Coast
Almost every fan thinks their derby is the biggest. Our derby certainly isn't the biggest (as if us and scum are massive clubs FFS, we're just filler for when the papers haven't got 'big' clubs to talk about), but it's certainly got a feeling of nastiness that other derbies don't have in England so it's quite 'interesting'. Although Portsmouth and Southampton themselves might be miles apart, look at a map and you can see we're all happily stuck together in one huge conurbation, so there's plenty of stick flying around. Fortunately for me i'm at the end of it where the last time I saw someone in a scummer shirt he was given a torrent of abuse, and he was just passing through on the trains.
The only reason the Brum derbies were interesting was because Savage was being a cxxt and starting fights all the time - since then it's calmed down quite a bit.
Biggest derby in England imo is Liverpool/Everton as right now they are two clubs near the top end of the league, who have been fighting it out for donkeys years. London clubs play each other far too often and have so many shit fans they aren't worth the bother. Don't get me wrong though, the next south coast derby is a huge match in terms of what's at stake considering all that's gone on and our positions in the table - hopefully the effect of a new manager might give us a prayer as all we need is one win (hopefully on sat vs charlton) to get a bit of confidence going.
If you want a proper derby, suggest Lazio v Roma, Barcelona v Real or Galatasaray v Fenerbahce as they are just a class above anything we have in the UK

Re: [FOOTBALL] So it's getting 'tasty' on the South Coast
My argument why villa/blues is the biggest derby is because when we play each other, we only play each other to get one up on the other team. The match means jack shit, its all about who wins. Neither club is going to get a european place or relegated, so the game is purely about who will win and the pride of winning, it has no hidden agenda behind it.
But like you have all said every fan is proud of there club.

Lets see
They get rid of a Wheela Deela Guvna Blinky Blonky Blimey manager , and bring in Reggie Perrin.
Who says that Pompey fans have no sense of humour.

disaggree
Take Liverpool v Everton there match has a consequence, ie champions league place
Take Southampton v portsmouth this could push one of the teams into relegation
Take Forest v Derby once again dims forest chance of getting away from relegation
villa v blues is purely about hate and football, it has no consequences for now and is pure in its outcome.

Re: [FOOTBALL] So it's getting 'tasty' on the South Coast
Pig - by your reckoning Forest V Notts County would be a big rivalry because the city ground and meadow lane are the two nearest grounds in the country.
However, I've been to a Forest V County match (a few years back) and although there was quite an atmosphere it was nothing compared to Forest V Derby.
I'm suprised noones mentioned the glasgow derby yet...
